Hello Carol,
The 71 are end-users not institutions, these are the users who have
registered for toc and sdi alerts, that means there are probably other
users who are not registered, you know you can still use the system
without having myCollection (registration).
I think the usage is getting better but very slow, a remote
access /proxy/ solution will for sure improve the situation as users
will be able to get access at anytime of the day.
Another thing I'd like to implement for the libraries in Africa is the
"link resolver" solution (already a part of libhub) which should be
setup at the remote popular databases and search engines e.g. pubmed and
google scholar, this will bring users back to your library to be served
(automatically) and get redirected to the fulltext if it's available for
them or offer a photocopy order service if not, other services and links
can be offered by the link resolver e.g. link to your OPAC, link to
further search engines, ask a librarian etc. It's the duty of the link
resolver to do all that job: calculate based on your holdings, embargo
and the availability of the resources and find out if the records found
at these remote databases are available for your users in fulltext or
not. I'll provide more detailed info about the resolver in the near
future.
Just comments:
For sure you already know that when we do stat analysis we must have in
mind the following :
How many users all in all do we have in the university,
How many of those are undergraduate students and how many are doing
research.
How visible are the resources, how much marketing the library has done
to promote it's services and products... etc. (at the moment your
library site is down)
How reliable the network is.
EZproxy: I'll send you something on Monday.
Best wishes
Salam
