Some items of interest for Curtis Park residents including the Dana Crawford memorial plans. Dana once lived at 2900 Champa St. The grand mansion, built in 1884, was originally home to Louis Anfenger who died in the home in 1900.  Anfenger was instrumental in establishing National Jewish Hospital. https://www.nationaljewish.org/about-us/our-history

Help Shape the Future of Preservation in Denver – Nominations Open!

Denver Landmark Preservation is seeking nominations for upcoming vacancies on the Landmark Preservation Commission (LPC), offering a unique opportunity to play a role in shaping the future of historic preservation in the city. The commission is responsible for reviewing proposed changes to Denver’s historic landmarks and districts, ensuring that modifications align with the city’s preservation goals.

Three positions are currently open for nomination: one member nominated by History Colorado, one nominated by the Denver Planning Board, and one at-large position. Ideal candidates include property owners or residents of historic landmarks or districts, as well as professionals in architecture, design, construction, or planning. Commissioners are appointed by the mayor and serve as unpaid volunteers.

The LPC meets twice a month on the first and third Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., with meetings lasting between two and four hours. In addition to design review, the commission evaluates historic designation applications, preservation tax credit requests, and demolition proposals for historic properties. Commissioners do not need to be Denver residents.

Gold, Fortune & Myth: The True Story of the Browns

For decades, stories of the Brown family's legendary wealth have fascinated the public. But how much of it is fact, and how much is fiction? On Tuesday, March 11, from 6–7 PM, join curator Stephanie McGuire at the Molly Brown House Museum for an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience that uncovers the truth behind the Brown family fortune. Using original source documents, letters, and financial records, this program will reveal where the Browns’ money truly came from, how it was spent, and what legacies it left behind.

Was the Brown family fortune really built on gold? Did they ever struggle financially? This interactive program offers a rare chance to examine historical documents firsthand, ask questions, and debunk long-standing myths with the museum’s expert curator. Gain exclusive access to the facts behind one of Denver’s most famous families and walk away with a deeper understanding of their financial reality. Tickets are $10 for Historic Denver members and $15 for non-members. Space is limited—reserve your spot today!

For those interested in a deeper dive, Jody Pritzl’s book Gold Fated Family uncovers the Browns’ financial story through 15,000 archival documents, unpublished letters, and court records. The book is available in the museum store.

History Colorado Announces This Year’s Hart Award Honorees

The Stephen H. Hart Awards for Historic Preservation will be held on Wednesday, April 2 at 5:00 PM at the History Colorado Center in Denver. Hosted by CBS Colorado News Anchor Mekialaya White, the annual event is free and open to the public. You can RSVP online.

This year’s honorees represent outstanding achievements in archaeology and historic preservation across the state. The selected projects include the Mosaic Campus at Johnson & Wales in Denver, the Centennial House at the University of Colorado Denver, "Buying a Mountain" in Silver Plume, the Plaza Block in La Junta, and the Rathbone Hotel in Montrose. These projects demonstrate exceptional restoration, research, and preservation techniques that honor Colorado’s diverse history and built environment.

This year, History Colorado is introducing Preservation for a New Day: Panel and Community Conversations, a new forum designed to explore the evolving role of preservation in addressing modern challenges, with a focus on housing. The event will take place from 2:30 to 5:00 PM, leading into the awards celebration. Moderated by History Colorado’s President and CEO, Dawn DiPrince, the panel will feature policymakers, preservationists, and community leaders discussing strategies for taking housing projects from concept to completion while honoring historic places and communities.

The Stephen H. Hart Awards are named in honor of Colorado’s first State Historic Preservation Officer, a trailblazer in preservation law whose impact continues to shape the field today. The event is generously sponsored by Holland & Hart LLP, the firm founded by Hart, which remains a leader in legal advocacy for preservation and historic resources.

Explore Denver’s Historic Five Points with Cocktails in Cool Places

Our much-loved program, Cocktails in Cool Places, returns this year with an exciting slate of buildings to enjoy. Kicking off the series on March 4 at 5:45 PM, we’ll travel to Welton Street in the Five Points neighborhood. This culturally significant, historically African American neighborhood gives us an opportunity to explore how zoning laws were used to segregate neighborhoods and ensure places like Five Points were kept as minority communities. Denver Public Library Special Collections Librarians, Brian Trembath and Katie Rudolph will explore this topic by looking at how Denver's zoning laws evolved and how they impacted individual families and their ability to choose where they lived in Denver.

From this presentation at the Blair Caldwell Library, we will walk down Welton Street to the location of the historic Douglass Mortuary, operated by the sons of noted abolitionist Frederick Douglass, this was an important business in the Five Points community from 1915 to 1944. Today it has been lovingly restored and is occupied by Urban Sanctuary, a black-owned yoga and wellness studio, offering classes to the community and offer access to classes through scholarships. Here, we’ll enjoy cocktails and light appetizers, while learning about the building and its current use.

Later in the year our program will travel to Potter Highlands in May, the Montclair neighborhood in July, and Riverside Cemetery in September. We’re adding the finishing details to this year’s programs, but each will be fascinating look at a historic site.
