Dear Reader,
When A Star Plays Another Star On Stage
It's been done on screen, on stage, still rare, when a star plays the role of another star. Eleri Griffiths's piece in
bbc.com is about Emmy Award-winning Matthew Rhys stepping onto a stage for the first time in 16 years to play Welsh icon Richard Burton, and saying it was "pretty terrifying"
Rhys, who grew up in Cardiff and now lives in New York, was cast in a one-man play celebrating Burton's centenary, and raising funds for the Welsh National Theatre.
Rhys said that PLAYING BURTON shows the famous Welsh actor reflecting on his "incredible life" and his "very fast rise to superstardom" in a short time. "It explores the "light and dark" sides of Burton's world - his love affair with Elizabeth Taylor, his struggle with alcoholism, and his "very complex relationship" with fame and identity, he added in the
bbc.com story.
Griffiths writes, "To Rhys, Burton was what "the staunchest Welshman you could ever wish for", yet possessed an almost "un-Welsh confidence" - a belief that he could "absolutely conquer each and every world...He didn't just walk the path; he blazed it."
Rhys said he hopes the production will "rekindle" Welsh theatre and honour Burton's legacy across Wales and that he was "very glad" the story may now reach a younger audience unfamiliar with Burton's influence.
Meanwhile, the UK in general and Wales in particular are celebrating Burton's centenary with great pomp! The man from a small Welsh town who went on to become a stage and film star! The country surely knows how to honour its icons!
"A lot of what acting is paying attention."
Robert Redford
