The Wonderful World Of Tom Hanks
Hollywood star Tom Hanks wrote a play and found the experience electrifying and terrifying, according to a piece he penned in The New York Times.
"At the very first rehearsal of the new Off Broadway play THIS WORLD OF TOMORROW, " he wrote, our director, Kenny Leon, stopped us after two minutes — two minutes. 'I don't want to hear how you are saying the lines,' he told us actors. 'I want to hear what you are saying'.
"We may have been focused on our dialects, but he was listening for the language of the play. And that language? It had evolved from prose on the page, my prose."
Such modesty from an international star is not something you come across often.
Hanks also played the role of a tech entrepreneur from 2089 who travels back to the 1939 World's Fair. He said he wanted to explore "lives caught between the certainties of our past and the unknowable future."
Not surprising then that the play got rave reviews. "This is a show worth traveling from any century for," commented the NY Theater Guide.
"A dramatist is one who believes that the pure event, an action involving human beings, is more arresting than any comment that can be made upon it."
