Dear Reader,
Orwell's Prophecies Come Alive On Stage
George Orwell may not have predicted AI level of mind control, but he did foresee Big Brother Watching in his classic sci-fi novel
1984.
Now, according to a report by Logan Culwell-Blick in playbill.gom, Lindsay Posner will direct the Ryan Craig-penned script based on the book. "Written in 1949, Orwell's dystopian thriller remains startlingly timely, telling a story of a world where your every move is being watched and monitored. An earlier adaptation, by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, played a Broadway run in 2017," says the report.
Of the earlier production, Ashley Lee had written in The Hollywood Reporter, "The Broadway play
1984 is not for the average theatergoer. Adapting George Orwell's dystopian novel - set in a future when critical thought is suppressed by a totalitarian regime, ostensibly overseen by a party leader known as Big Brother - the non-linear staging includes special effects like strobe lights, sudden blackouts and jackhammer sounds, in addition to the plot's extreme torture scenes. Throughout the London transfer's previews, attendees have fainted, thrown up and screamed at the actors from their seats. After one performance, some audience members were so on edge that they immediately got into a heightened argument. Cops were called; charges were pressed."
When was the last time anything like this happened in Mumbai? Audiences here are just too well-behaved.
"The theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it's so accidental. It's so much like life."
- Arthur Miller
