Dear Readers,

Satyadev Dubey passed away on 25th December 2011. We dedicate this issue of Mumbai Theatre Guide to him. Our Gupshup section reproduces a 2006 interview that the 'Architect of Modern Indian Theatre' had with Ramu Ramanathan and Rishi Mazumdar. The interview, which was for the Prithvi Theatre Newsletter (PT Notes) is special because it is an extensive and an in-depth interview, carried out in Dubey's home, almost like a scene from a play with multiple characters dissecting the nature and role of Dubey's theatre. Dubey talked about actor training and his workshops, offered his observations on the plays of that time, including his own- THAAMB LAKSHMI KUNKU LAAVTE while simultaneously responding to questions posed by playwrights like Vijay Tendulkar, Mahesh Elkunchwar, Satish Alekar and Chetan Datar.

In our Features' section we have Sunil Shanbag, Director and Filmmaker reminisce his times with Dubey. Sunil was 17 when he first met Dubey and has since been one of his closest associates. Dubey's was a formidable presence in our theatre. The man had his quirks and failings and lived a life in the theatre by his rules but his legacy is powerful and undeniable. In a way, his example offers a pure, childlike enthusiasm for the stage, unadulterated by the lure of money, success or power. Dubey did theatre for the sake of doing theatre and his fundamentals concerning the body and the speech of the actor were very strong. Something that a lot of our younger theatre practitioners need to still learn- the sheer potency of presence and words. Dubey was a master at it. There will be many of us who will miss him.

Our updates for the week include previews of new plays, DUDHAVARCHI SAY (Marathi) and GANDHI TARIBEEK CHHE BAKI BADHU THEEK CHHE (Gujarati) and reviews of PATIENT (Marathi) LAAL PENCIL (Hindi) and THE WATER STATION. PATIENT was part of Thespo 13 this year and LAAL PENCIL is a new play by Manav Kaul. Sankar Venkateswaran's Theatre Roots and Wings from Thrissur in Kerala, brought THE WATER STATION to Mumbai a couple of weeks back. The wordless play is by the late Japanese playwright-director, Shogo Ohta.

Once more we urge you to go and see the Industrial Theatre Co's HAYAVADANA (English), arguably the best production from Mumbai this year. It will also conclude its run of shows at the KR Cama auditorium this weekend. We will be seeing you in the New Year; January is all set for a showcase of new and original plays at the upcoming Writers' Bloc Festival. We will have more on the festival to share with you next week but the schedule is already up for you to check and book tickets. Thespo is having shows of its award winning play, EK DON ADHICH (Marathi) early next week at Prithvi Theatre.

We wish you all a happy and a peaceful 2012, and sign off with MTG's very own tweets that we have featured especially for you. Enjoy.

Cheers,
Deepa Punjani.
