Theatre For Kids Is Challenging
Summer is the time for children's plays and workshops proliferating all over Mumbai. These activities keep kids busy and also, hopefully, develop in them a taste for culture. Theatre makers in Mumbai struggle with resources for children's theatre, and later, for venues to continue running the productions.
So, it was interesting to read about the Edinburgh international children's festival, in a Guardian report by Mark Fisher, in which he observes, "From a gentle exploration of tubes and spheres to a forthright examination of climate change, immersive puppetry and minimalist narrators, this is mesmerising for families and children alike.
"Not too long ago, theatre for babies sounded like a crazy indulgence. Now, the Edinburgh international children's festival says it could sell out its shows for the under-twos several times over. Watching a performance such as UNIVERS, you can see why. It is not only the babies who are mesmerised, it is the toddlers and adults, too."
Kids are usually easy to please if a show keeps holding their attention, it's the accompanying adults who also have to be engaged! That's where the challenge lies.
