Tragic Picture Of Ageing
Alexander Zeldin’s devastating play, CARE, depicts the gruelling loneliness and confusion of life in a care home, writes Arifa Akbar in The Guardian.
"Set in what seems like a locked dementia ward, this play is both an unwavering portrait of what it means to be old, and an indictment of a system that leads to such acute loneliness in this last leg of life.
"Cumulatively," she concludes, "the play makes you feel there has to be another way of looking after our older people, no matter the heroism of carers." A character says, "Someone has to be responsible for what’s happening to us.” The shock, disbelief and sense of sad outrage in that statement hangs heavy, comments the writer.
The retirement home phenomenon is catching on in India too. And the problems of ageing need to be portrayed with clear-eyed compassion, not melodrama.
