Dear Reader,

Rare Gem Of A Playwright

With the passing of Tom Stoppard, on November 29, the world of theatre has lost a great playwright.

West End theatres dimmed their lights for two minutes on Tuesday in remembrance. Its president, Kash Bennett, said Stoppard's "extraordinary voice reshaped modern theatre, combining intellectual daring, emotional depth and razor-sharp wit in work that challenged, moved and delighted audiences across generations."

The obituaries in the British press have been adulatory, which is what Stoppard deserved.

A tribute in The Guardian by Claire Armitstead and Chris Wiegand stated, "One of a select band of writers from any discipline to earn his own adjective – "Stoppardian" – in the Oxford English Dictionary, he delighted in the most improbable juxtapositions: philosophy and gymnastics in JUMPERS (1972); early 19th-century landscape gardening and chaos theory in ARCADIA (1993); rock music, dissident Czech academics and the love poetry of Sappho in ROCK'N'ROLL (2006)."

Tim Stoppard, RIP!

"Acting expresses a part of the self otherwise hidden to the conscious mind."
