A Surprise Screen To Stage Adaptation
The small but moving romantic drama, The Lunchbox, directed by Ritesh Batra is reported to be in preparation for its new incarnation as a stage musical.
The project has been commissioned by the Lincoln Center Theatre and will feature songs co-written by The Lazours, with original director Ritesh Batra adapting his own script. Rachel Chavkin is set to direct the world premiere at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, with an opening expected in May 2026.
The Lunchbox (2013) was an acclaimed romantic drama starring Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, about a connection made between a lonely housewife and a man nearing retirement, who receives the wrong tiffin by mistake.
Come to think of it, the story seems made for theatre. It remains to be seen, who will be cast for the role Irrfan Khan made his own.
