Dear Reader,
Merrily They Rolled Along
A strange and wonderful thing happened this year at the Tony Awards that honour excellence on Broadway-- all eight winners in the acting categories took home their first trophies. According to a report in The New York Times, the playwright David Adjmi, in his Broadway debut, won for STEREOPHONIC, as did its director Daniel Aukin, also a Tony-winning newbie. Danya Taymor took home the prize for best direction of a musical for THE OUTSIDERS , her initial win. (THE OUTSIDERS also won for best musical.) In a mellow, equitable night, the other awards were spread among many of the nominated shows, with STEREOPHONIC, THE OUTSIDERS, APPROPRIATE and an ingeniously reimagined MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG carrying home the top prizes."
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe picked up his first ever Tony Award for best actor in a musical for his role in the revival of Stephan Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along. The popular star finally proving that he has the talent to impress on stage.
The most nominated play in Tony history with 13 nominations, STEREOPHONIC won five awards including best play. In his acceptance speech, playwright David Adjmi spoke about how hard it was to make a career in the arts and said more funding for the arts was necessary.
That sentiment would resonate with stage professionals all over the world!
"Theatre is a voyage into the archives of the human imagination."
