Dear Reader,

Theatre For Positive Change

At a time when immigrants to the West are facing a rough time, Sabah Choudhry reports in bcc.com about a "festive stage play charting the experience of migrants in Oxford is a "love letter" to earlier generations of immigrants to the city, according to its producer."

She writes, "BEFORE THE MILLENNIUM is told through the eyes of two Pakistani immigrants arriving in Oxford in 1999. Written by Karim Khan, it follows two young women - Zoya and Iqra - working in Woolworths on Cowley Road as the millennium approaches, before a ghostly visit from the future intervenes.

"It deals with issues faced by immigrants at the time, including homesickness, the challenges of settling in a completely new country and learning a new language."

Producer Jessie Anand is quoted as having said, "It tries to understand better what they went through, what they lost, what they gained."

Anand added the show was a form of "resistance", using "theatre as a tool to change people's minds in a way that they weren't expecting."

What better way than theatre to reach out to people and initiate social change.

"You'd think is something one would grow out of. But you grow into it. The more you do, the more you realize how painfully easy it is to be lousy and how very difficult to be good."
