Dear Reader,

Theatre In A Troubled Land: There is a very interesting report in The Guardian, by Emma Graham-Harrison about the Freedom Theatre in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank, raided and destroyed by the Israeli military last month. This extraordinary theatre was founded by two men, "one the son of a Jewish Israeli and a Palestinian refugee – the other a dangerous militant."

According to an introduction to the podcast in which she talks about her experience, Harrison travelled to the refugee camp and "watched a performance by local teenagers and heard how acting offered a form of therapy for their ongoing trauma. She tells Nosheen Iqbal (in the podcast) how violent life can be in Jenin refugee camp and how life has become dangerous for many Palestinian artists across Gaza. She explains how Ahmed Tobasi (artistic director of the theatre) views the theatre as a form of cultural resistance that helps assert a Palestinian cultural identity under occupation. And how necessary the humanising effect of art can be for both sides in the conflict when it comes to making peace."

It is believed that art and culture offers hope to people in conflict zones, so it is an idea worth fighting for, but reality is still dangerous and tragic. That people have the heart and the courage to keep writing and performing under the shadow of guns and bombs is just proof of human resilience.

"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance."
- Aristotle
