How To Revive A Classic
MY FAIR LADY, the musical stage version of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, has proved to be so popular and has been staged so many times, in every part of the world, that it seems improbable, if not impossible for a new production to be staged and receive rave reviews.
The play has sometimes been criticised for its old-fashioned plot that, by current standards is oblivious to class and gender issues.
According to Sarah Noble's review of James Brining's new MY FAIR LADY, the stuffy, snobby Professor Higgins is portrayed as "loose-limbed, soft-edged and chaotic, his vulnerable model of masculinity – set against an Eliza of unwavering wit and self-possession – offsets the book’s occasional misogyny, in a production that takes its interrogation of social mobility seriously but still conjures up plenty of comedy and chemistry along the way."
With the evergreen songs, the production would appeal to audiences who have not yet encountered the feisty Eliza Doolittle. This new production sounds like fun!
