Rehearsals Can Be Fun
Mumbai theatre folk rehearsing in the midst of a sweltering summer would envy the UK group that is conducting play rehearsals in a swimming pool!
According to a report in bbc.com, by Alice Cullinane and Joan Cummins, the cast of SWIM, AUNTY, SWIM! have been practising their swimming techniques.
The play follows the lives of West African Women and "celebrates migration and friendship while aiming to show audiences that it is never too later to get into the water."
In the report, playwright Siana Bangura described the production "as a show that featured women who learn to swim literally, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I hope this work serves as a celebration of ageing," she added. "Too often in our societies, women especially are made to feel ashamed of growing older."
Bangura said the swimming pool was "crucial to help the actors understand the movement of water before replicating it on stage."
Sure...but it also undoubtedly makes actors look forward to rehearsals. In Mumbai, the best that can be hoped for is an air conditioned space and half way decent tea.
