Dear Reader,

Can Theatre Go On Strike?

In India, where so much theatre works on mostly goodwill and passion, could anyone think of going on strike? More importantly, would anyone care?

Broadway actors and musicians union might go on strike, reports Diep Tran in playbill.com. "The reason being: stalled negotiations with the Broadway League for a new Broadway work contract. The actors' and stage managers union, Actors' Equity Association, has also brought up striking as a possible option, since their Broadway work contracts are also being renegotiated."

He asks what it would mean for Broadway and off Broadway shows?

According to another other report, "The union says negotiations will continue over the coming days and weeks. A potential strike would impact every production on Broadway that uses musicians (except RAGTIM3—which is under a different contract with Lincoln Center)."

Theatre lovers who flock to Broadway for their fix of grand musicals would be sorely disappointed, not to mention the huge losses due to dark theatres. May better sense prevail.

"A nation that does not support and encourage its theater is -- if not dead -- dying; just as a theater that does not capture with laughter and tears the social and historical pulse, the drama of its people, the genuine color of the spiritual and natural landscape, has no right to call itself theater; but only a place for amusement."
Federico Garcia Lorc
