Dear Reader,
From Screen To Stage
Hollywood and Broadway have, over the years, developed a remarkable tradition of give-and-take. It is understandable that Broadway shows would provide material for cinema, but quite often, it is the other way around. Why would audiences pay big money to watch a stage production they have already watched on the screen? Because of the thrill of a live experience, also, perhaps to see popular stars on stage.
According to a feature in
The Hindustan Times, quite a few Hollywood hits are waiting in the wings to make a splash on Broadway. Among them there's
Crazy Rich Asians, which is based on Kevin Kwan's bestselling trilogy of books. The musical will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who also directed the movie. This one has the advantage of giving acting opportunities to an Asian cast.
The Outsiders, based on SE Hinton's coming of age novel which was turned into a movie in1983 by Francis Ford Coppola,
The Notebook, based on Nicholas Sparks' 1996 bestseller, the Oscar-winning
La La Land, and
The Devil Wears Prada are headed for the stage too.
In Bollywood, a few attempts have been made to adapt movies for the stage (
Devdas, Umrao Jaan, Disco Dancer), but only
Mughal-e-Azam has been super successful. Still, for a producer with deep pockets and a director with creative imagination, there is gold to be mined in some of the old Hindi movie classics, that knew how to use songs to maximum effect.
"Theatre is a sacred space for actors. You are responsible; you are in the driving-seat."
- Greta Scacchi
