Has anyone else tried the new UI in 2023.1?  I really like it.  Makes Cursive much faster and more responsive.  Experiencing the same in Rubymine, PyCharm, etc.

I'm on an M2 Mac mini, but I feel NO speed difference between the old and a new UI.

There is however a quite noticeable speed difference between the previous stable release
and the current 2023.1 stable release.

The startup time feels a few seconds faster, because the IDE becomes responsive earlier
in its boot process. See the "Earlier availability of IDE features on project opening" section

What I do notice and absolutely hate, how the new UI has a super thick gutter, which
I found no way to reduce to that level as it was in the old UI.
I usually have 2-3 code editor columns + the Cursive REPL tool window.
The extra gutter wastes about 1-2 character width per editor split. I could hardly fit
3x80 column width on 1080p resolution or 4x80 cols width on 2K resolution, so it's
it's very annoying that I'm losing 4-6 extra characters for "aesthetic" reasons...

I went from the previous stable to the current 2023.1 new release with the new UI, so I might be conflating the new UI with overall IntelliJ speed improvements.

I'm also using the "Compact" mode in the new UI.

I was talking about the compact mode too.
Even if I turn off the folding support, there is an unnecessarily wide margin.
And by unnecessary, I mean the old UI is the proof that a narrower margin
can absolutely work, so it just smells like some organizational issue, where
the UI designer is just too rigid and not really listening to the market and
care more about how other editors are designed or tries to adhere to some
design philosophies dogmatically, instead of pragmatically.
Maybe I should try building the CE version and hack the width in that...

Looks like they updated the Compact Mode based on feedback, Tom, check it out.

Thanks for the heads up,but the gutter is still the same brutal width unfortunately :(

I've even tried to disable *Settings / Version Control / Confirmation / Highlight modified lines in the gutter*
but no difference.

The weird thing is, that I'm not sure what is all that space, because when I'm toggling the
*View | Active Editor: Show Gutter Icons*, the gutter width difference is 2-3px only.

So this is still a show-stopper for me, unfortunately.

Everything else seems great otherwise, though I preferred the original Tool window bar with the vertical text.
I keep that turned off anyway, to maximize the available horizontal space, so it's a quite minor issue.
