If I run the following command: Get-DefaultAudioDeviceVolume it often returns a number that looks something like: 50.05816%, which I have confirmed to be a string. I need to convert this to a whole number integer (50). Obviously I could hard code the integer in my script, but for the purpose of the script I need it to be flexible in it's conversion. Sometimes you have data in an array data type that needs to be in a string data type. One example of this would be if you need to send the data in an email, you don't want to loop through all of the elements of the array, just convert it to a string and send it on its way.
LastLogonDate is a converted version of LastLogonTimestamp and is replicated among DCs with up to a 14 day delay. Since you are querying 30 days back, LastLogonDate is appropriate if you understand the limitations. More on that later.

Anyway, I was writing some Pester tests for a module that I was writing when I needed some sample data. I have written before about using Json for this purpose This function required some data from a database so I wrote the query to get the data and used dbatools to run the query against the database using Get-DbaDatabase
Which meant that I could easily separate it for mocking in my test. I ran the code and investigated the $variable variable to ensure it had what I wanted for my test and then decided to convert it into JSON using ConvertTo-Json
The results were just what I wanted so I thought I will just convert them to JSON and save them in a file and bingo I have some test data in a mock to ensure my code is doing what I expect. However, when I run

In the advanced job step options, you have your on success action to go to step 2 which runs the exe in question via powershell. And set your failure action to "quit the job reporting success".
Now, the reason you got the " = was unexpected at this time. Process Exit Code 1. The step failed." error is because according to the command prompt, the "=" character was unexpected. Which makes sense as the whole master.dbo.fn_hadr_group_is_primary('WEB_AG') is not parseable from the command prompt (ie cmdexec). And "print" is not the command you want to run from the command line either; you want "ECHO". If you are trying to build up a CmdExec command to run, you should build that from the command prompt. The easiest way is to build a .bat file. If that runs successfully, then copy-pasting that into the job step that uses CmdExec should also run successfully. I say "should" because if you are relying on relative paths instead of absolute paths or running it with network share drive letters instead of UNC paths, you can sometimes get inconsistencies with running it from the command line and running it from a SQL job step..
The above is all just my opinion on what you should do.
As with all advice you find on a random internet forum - you shouldn't blindly follow it. Always test on a test server to see if there is negative side effects before making changes to live!
I recommend you NEVER run "random code" you found online on any system you care about UNLESS you understand and can verify the code OR you don't care if the code trashes your system.
p.s. Simple CmdExec in the job would do it without either xp_CmdShell or PoSH. But, if you were to use xp_CmdShell, it's uber simple to capture the feedback so you can programmatically determine if the job ran fine or not and what type of email you might want to send either way. It's also pretty handy for keeping a trail of breadcrumbs for when the auditors descend upon you. ?

This is something that I quickly hacked together for someone in the community who needed to batch convert a whole bunch of docx files into markdown on windows. I found a couple of GUIs for pandoc but none of them could process docx files in batch for some reason, so I decided to do it with PowerShell instead.
I tested it with
docx file with table (interesting visual for row in italics )
epub War and Peace (too big for Typora, handled fine by Obsidian if somewhat slow loading; some glitches on chapter headings and Index).
A few glitches in complex documents are normal in pandoc, and I have to remember it uses markdown links, but this was very impressive for the script and Obsidian.
I have encountered a problem, when dealing with multiple docx documents, if the image name inside is the same,like image1.png, it will be automatically replaced so that only 1 file remain. How to solve this problem?Thank you!
The fundamental difference between the PowerShell script and chef is that the powershell script describes actions - the steps to take. You would generally only run a PowerShell script once. Chef describes the desired state. You can run it as many times as you want, and it will only take actions the first time (or whenever something actually needs to be done). Very often, to actually accomplish what you need, you would embed a PowerShell script in Chef in the first place.
That said, your PowerShell script seems to pretty much just be a wrapper around msdeploy.exe? There is an msdeploy cookbook in the supermarket at . It is several years old, but you could always clone it and use it as a starting point for what you actually need.
Recently, I shared some PowerShell code to export a function to a file. It was a popular post. My friend Richard Hicks (no relation) thought we was joking when he asked about converting files to functions. His thought was to take a bunch of PowerShell scripts, turn them into a group of functions which could then be organized into a module. This is not that far-fetched. So I spent some time the last few days and came up with a PowerShell function to take an existing PowerShell script file and turn it into a PowerShell function.
Practically speaking, there is no difference between running the code inside a function and a script. A function is at its core a scriptblock with a name that makes it easier to run. The code inside the scriptblock is no different than what you might have in a stand-alone script. Depending on your script, you could simply wrap your script code in a Function declaration. Of course, the best practice is for functions to do a single task and write a single type of object to the pipeline so you might still need to edit your resulting function. What I came up with was a PowerShell tool using the AST to accelerate the process.
