Principal’s Update, April 29, 2011

Another year of STAR/CST testing is in the books!  I’d like to extend a huge “Thank you!” for getting children to school on time every day.  We even had classes that had ZERO absences or tardies all week!  Absences impact all students and teachers because it takes time away from class the following week to make up any missed tests (usually in class while the other students are reading/working quietly).  So again, thank you!

“Test Taker Face” Video:  This VERY cute YouTube video (made by elementary students in Georgia ) was found and passed along by a Curie teacher.  Hope you enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1xJHYJ75Ok

Wednesday’s Parent Coffee Cancelled:  I will be attending a workshop regarding the new Common Core Standards on Wednesday.  We had our largest turnout to date at the last Parent Coffee just a couple weeks ago - I hope you can come on out and join us for the next one on June 7!  We meet at 7:45am in room B14.

Free La Jolla Symphony Dress Rehearsal Tonight!  (See attached.)

Richard Louv Event, May 6 (See attached.)

Louv’s prior book “Last Child in the Woods” was largely responsible for the Curie Campouts getting started!

“Ironkids” Updates (May 22):

Please let me know if you can volunteer!  I’ve been asked a few questions about the race, so here are some details:

  • The Swim: It is not in shallow enough water for the kids to stand up, but the course is lined with the Aquatic Safety team in kayakers and paddle boarders.  The kids are able to (and encouraged to) hold onto the kayaks and paddle boards if they get tired, and there is no penalty for doing so.
  • Bikes:  ANY bike will do!  Many kids were on mountain bikes last year, as well as a number of BMX bikes, and even one with training wheels.
  • Distances (age: swim, bike, run):
    • 6-8 years old: 50 yards, 2 miles, 500 yards
    • 9-11 years old: 150 yards, 4 miles, 1 mile
    • 12-15 years old: 300 yards, 8 miles, 2 miles

Thank you, and have a beautiful weekend.  Hope to see you at Taste of the Triangle!
