Curie Families,

What a fantastic few days it has been around campus!  School Performances, Teacher Appreciation, Volunteer Tea, Hyatt Career Day, Kindergarten Celebrations, Ironkids… the list goes on and on – and it’s only just begun!  Tomorrow of course we have Dad’s Club and the 1st/2nd grade Games Day.  I hope you can make it out to Curie, even for just one morning or afternoon, to enjoy these celebrations of your child’s year.  Today’s Volunteer Tea was a wonderful time to pause and reflect on just how important the efforts of all of our volunteers are to our community.  Thank you!

Budget Update:

There is some mildly encouraging news at the state level regarding a plan for greater K-12 funding.  But with several major contingencies, we haven’t yet seen any changes in the budget discussion at the local level.  A great deal will likely be decided by the SDUSD School Board by the end of June, though probably with some of those same contingencies.

Class Size, Composition, and Placements:

With no finality regarding class size likely until summer (or later), we do not yet have an idea what the composition of classes will be next year.  We may have combination classes, or grade level changes for teachers, both of which will still provide solid educational opportunities with excellent teachers.  If we have larger class sizes and thus fewer classrooms, this may limit our flexibility somewhat in trying to ensure best placements for students with exceptional needs or circumstances, but if you have something that you would like to be considered, please submit a letter or email describing these needs (send to Chris Juarez in the office, or email me at cjua...@sandi.net).  Please note that letters/emails MUST be received by the end of the school year.  Requests to have or not have individual teachers can’t be considered, so instead please describe the needs of your child.

Dress Code:

A quick request to double-check what students are wearing before sending them off to school.  It’s that time of year when it’s getting difficult enough for our older students to concentrate as it is!  Spaghetti straps, bare midriff tops, very short shorts, and clothing with beer logos aren’t appropriate in an elementary school setting, and please also remember that for safety reasons on the playground students can’t wear open-toed sandals.  Thanks for your help these last couple weeks!

Two, Yes TWO Campouts Ahead!

If you can’t make it to the upcoming Curie Campout, please check out the Great American Background Campout the following weekend (June 25)!  Taken from the website, and I absolutely agree – this is why we started the Curie Campouts: When kids don’t get outdoor time, studies show their physical, mental and emotional health suffers. “Indoor Kids” are more likely to be obese, perform poorly in school and feel anxious. You can help us change that by joining NWF’s Great American Backyard Campout on June 25th.
