Principal’s Update, May 6, 2011
Joe’s Pizza 5th Grade FUNdraiser is tonight!: 5583 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard
A “Team Curie Ironkids” has been set up for the May 22 Ironkids event. If you’ve already registered, let me know and I can have them add you. Free clinics with Coach Andy, a GREAT kids’ coach, continue this weekend. Sunday’s youth workout in Sorrento Valley is designed to help our young athletes complete the Ironkids distances and practice “transitions”, but this free workout is open to ANY child (racing or not). As always, ask me for details! Cjua...@sandi.net
Budget Update – Support Staff Impact:
Pretty much everything we know about next year is still up in the air. With much still in “the plan as of right now” stage, there is uncertainty about class size, teacher excessing, VAPA (arts), athletics, busing… and now there is also a great deal of uncertainly over Curie’s support staff. In the last few days, we learned that due to bumping, layoffs, and one retirement, EVERY member of Curie’s site-funded support staff is slated to be gone from Curie next year. These positions include the secretary, school clerk, guidance assistant, health assistant, and library assistant. That is correct - ALL of them. The “why” takes a bit of explaining. While our SSC has made a commitment to keeping our support staff in place, other schools may not have been able to do so, opening the door for more senior employees to
bump into positions if their jobs have been reduced or eliminated. This is such a difficult and emotional process, because we love our support staff, but we do understand both perspectives on the issue. As major budget and staffing items get resolved in the coming weeks and months, I will certainly keep you updated.
Mrs. Saavedra, La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club Teacher of the Year Finalist!
This morning, Mrs. Saavedra was one of only four teachers out of the 600 teachers in the UC and LJ public and private schools to be honored by the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club as a Teacher of the Year Finalist. It was a wonderful celebration at the La Jolla Marriott, with many individuals sharing stories of the teacher that had made an impact in their own youth. If I asked you to think of a teacher that made an impact on your life, chances are you would conjure up a name in seconds. Great teachers touch us forever. Thank you to Mrs. Saavedra and to all great teachers everywhere!
A Happy Mothers’ Day to all,
