Dear Curie Community Members,
Here are some items I hope you find interesting as we head towards the weekend. Remember, testing starts next week for 2nd-5th grade! Testing is of course on the minds of our students, and while we want them to do well, we DON’T want them to worry. Our teachers have prepared them well, not just for testing but for the many things they need to learn in order to be productive and contributing citizens of a school community and larger society.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Denise Daglio (fifth grade teacher) was honored as Barnes & Noble’s Teacher of the Year for the Costa Verde store’s region! Congratulations to Mrs. Daglio!
Curie Selected for “Honor Roll” by the California Business for Education Excellence: Curie has been named an Honor Roll school again for 2010! The award is based on the performance of subgroup populations (English Learners and Economically Disadvantaged) as well as the total school population. Congratulations to all our staff, parents/families, volunteers, and students. It’s nice to be recognized in this way, and the honor is definitely a team achievement!
Volunteers Needed for Ironkids San Diego , Sunday May 22: The kids need you! I need you! I’ll be the volunteer coordinator for the bike portion of Ironkids San Diego this year. If you can spend a few VERY rewarding hours at Mission Bay helping kids gain a huge feeling of personal accomplishment, I would LOVE to hear from you! Cjua...@sandi.net We need bike course cyclists (bike skills needed) and marshals (ability to stand and point needed) - please contact me for details!
With several different distances, this event supports kids of ALL levels of ability and experience. Last year, the first kids across the line were from international teams proudly wearing their country’s uniforms. Racing the longer event, they looked every bit the future Olympians they were. The last little girl to cross the line, however, was the one that stole hearts that day. Participating in the shortest event, she had training wheels on her bike and streamers on her handlebars! ALL finishers (including five Curie kids!) received the same enthusiastic support from the crowd and the finisher’s medal at the end. It is an absolutely wonderful day for kids, parents, and volunteers. I’ll cover the child’s registration fee for the first family that signs up a racer
and a volunteer! Cjua...@sandi.net, http://www.ironkids.com/2011_Schedule/IronKids_San_Diego.htm
School Libraries: Another interesting read, this one describing the current issue many SDUSD schools are facing, trying to keep a library open without any staff (Curie will continue to have ours staffed next year) http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/education/schooled/article_56bf9be4-6b99-11e0-b6e3-001cc4c03286.html

Strawberries Every Where at Curie!
Western Growers Funded a Grant last year for the purchase of Fruit Trees for Curie. The representative from the grant (Briana Lewis) came to the garden today with a strawberry farmer named Dave (Farmer Dave). After giving a presentation on how to grow fruit to Mrs. McKelvey's, Ms. Tingley's, Mrs. Sipe's, and Mrs. Calvao's classes each child was given a container of strawberries to take home. Farmer Dave was very generous and brought over 100 lbs. of strawberries for our teachers and staff. They were very yummy and the children were devouring them. Thank you Farmer Dave and Western Growers!!!
Miss Mary your garden lady =)
