Subject: New twist on the old registry call scams
To:

Hello all,

I’ve been with my current girlfriend for just over nine years now. Before we met, she had dated another Registered Person, but they split up a year before we met in person. She has been involved in anti-registry activism for a decade now. The other day, she received a call thay showed up on her phone as coming from the sheriff’s office from the area where she once resided with her ex-boyfriend from a decade ago. She answered the phone and the man on the other line claimed to be a sherifff’s deputy and claimed that she was required to register and failed to do so, and that she owed money that could be wired to this “deputy” to avoid arrest.

It is a slight twist on the old scam. But my girlfriend doesn’t post her phone number on any public forum or social media, nor do I. The call was from the county of her ex and not my current county of residence. The only conclusion that can be made is that the scammer accessed data from the state where my girlfriend’s ex resided. The difference is that the scammer tried targeting her. Perhaps he didn’t bother to read the name.

This is a reminder for Registered Persons to talk to all their loved ones about these scams because they can be targeted as well if their information was sent to law enforcement even if it is just as an emergency contact.
