For too many years members of our organization have seen and heard of the often needless and unfair life barriers and difficulties experienced by people forced to be publicly listed on a sex offender registry. Many of us who are working to change this situation and help others navigate these challenges are living with this experience ourselves. We know that dealing with the registry is a constant burden on the lives of people required to register and their families and, in many instances, prevents them from any chance of a normal life. Other formerly incarcerated people, even those convicted of violent, persistent or even deadly crimes, face no such burden or continued public exposure.  They will experience the difficulties in their new start that comes with a felony conviction, but they won’t have what is easily compared to a scarlet letter on their forehead for years as forced registrants do.

During 2025 a new coalition of organizations and like-minded advocates in our field that have a long-range goal of eliminating the registry has continued to plan and work toward that goal. Coordinated by the Restorative Action Alliance, this year has been utilized for preliminary plans, sessions for everyone to share their concerns and thoughts, and in developing a steering committee to develop a blueprint on how to successfully advocate for meaningful policy change.  Known as the National Coalition Against Conviction Registries, the participants continue holding monthly meetings to develop strategies to accomplish this important task.

Several members of the Board of Directors of CURE-SORT and supporters of our work are participants in this process.  Though our primary mission involves promotion of therapy for those with needs in their journey of recovery from a sex offense, it has become very clear that developing a new life after prison has huge obstacles unnecessarily caused by the registry, denying those forced to register an even playing field, and thus we strongly support this coalition. It is another one of the major tasks in which we’ve participated in our 35 years of efforts.

Our work continues in responding to many requests from people still incarcerated requesting information about our organization and our resources, and for guidance on issues related to various state registration requirements, residential and employment distance exclusions, halfway house locations, and reentry support as they and their loved ones attempt to plan for life after release. We also have people working directly with the 20 states that have civil commitment laws, legal processes which allow a person to be held even after their prison sentence has been completed.  Under these systems, a court or a committee holds a hearing and makes a finding that someone previously convicted of a sex related offense may reoffend and therefore can be detained and provided therapy until they are deemed unlikely to reoffend.  However, we have found that release from these facilities is very limited and that many of them are operated by a private company that may have a financial incentive to limit the number of people released.

CURE-SORT has been financially impacted by repeated price increases by the US Postal Service, affecting not only the mailing of our newsletter but also sending out the other information and resources requested by those we are trying to help. The cost of just printing our newsletter has also continued to rise.  These are our biggest costs, as all of us who operate CURE-SORT are unpaid volunteers. Your assistance is needed and will be greatly appreciated in helping us continue to send materials to people who greatly value our assistance

As has always been the case with our program, we operate on a very small and tight budget with no grants, so your donations, no matter how small, are hugely important appreciated and ever so needed.  May I make a suggestion? If you can’t make a regular donation, you can cut down on our expenses by receiving the newsletter by email if you can.  We offer the newsletter on Google Groups and if you are not doing so, just making that change to receive it by email would save us over $5 annually. It adds up. And you get much more information about our issue on Google Groups!
All funds go right to operations as there are no salaries.  Thank you for your assistance with us in continuing to help people in gaining more control of their lives. Prevention of reoffending and promoting necessary therapy for those needing it is always the major focus of our mission, with helping navigate registry barriers a growing area of our focus.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for your service to our cause and your continued financial help to make our work possible.
Sincerely,

Wayne Bowers
Chairman of the Board
CURE-SORT Director
