Join the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' 24th Annual State Criminal Justice Network Conference. This year’s theme, Shaping Justice: Criminal Defense and State Policy Reform, brings together criminal defense attorneys, advocates, policymakers, and community members to discuss the evolving landscape of criminal justice. The conference will offer a series of panels and discussions that examine structural challenges, community impact, and pathways toward meaningful reform.
 
This year’s conference will feature a panel discussion on Power, Policy, and Public Defense: Safeguarding Independence in State Defender Systems on Thursday, October 9th from 1:00pm – 2:00pm ET. Leaders in public defense and public defense research will share insights on the challenges facing defender systems, examine models for maintaining institutional independence, and offer perspectives on policy solutions that support effective representation.

Serving as moderator, Bonnie Hoffman, Director of Public Defense at the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, will guide the discussion between experts Pamela Metzger, Executive Director of the Deason Criminal Justice Reform Center; Melody Brannon, Federal Public Defender for the District of Kansas; Keisha Hudson, Chief Defender of Philadelphia; and Sharlyn Grace, Deputy Public Defender for Policy at the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender.
