This coming Tuesday, we'll finish our conversation with fellow advocate Trent
McKenna. Trent is an Oklahoma-based husband, father, Navy veteran,
former corrections officer, and advocate for registry reform. He is
currently completing his Master of Science in Psychology with an
Industrial-Organizational focus and will graduate in June. As a person
required to register, Trent has spent years navigating the registry
while raising three sons and trying to maintain family stability under
the restrictions, stigma, and collateral consequences that come with
registration.
His advocacy is shaped by lived experience with
how registry laws affect not only the individual, but also spouses,
children, housing, education, medical care, employment, and normal
family life. Trent brings a family-centered perspective to reform
efforts and believes meaningful change must include the voices of those
who have lived under these policies every day.
Our
discussion will focus on the gap that can occur between what people
believe they are agreeing to during a plea agreement and the long-term
registry consequences that sometimes follow. Trent will also touch on
the policy and statutory issues that can lead to those outcomes and some
of the pathways people are exploring to address them.
