REENTRY

Beyond Recidivism: 5 Measures Every State Should Track to Improve Reentry

Recidivism alone doesn’t capture the full story of how successful a reentry program is. This new brief highlights critical reentry outcomes (and dozens of metrics) related to health care, housing, and employment that states and localities may not be tracking.

STATE INNOVATION

From Courtroom to Care: 5 Strategies Behind a New Jail Diversion Program

With new funding from the legislature, New Mexico is rapidly expanding a pilot program that’s diverting people with mental health needs and low-level charges out of the justice system and into treatment and housing.

MENTAL HEALTH

The 10-Year Impact—and Future—of Stepping Up

As the Stepping Up initiative marks its 10th year, America is still facing a behavioral health crisis in jails and communities—but we now know more about how to overcome it. Since 2015, the CSG Justice Center, American Psychiatric Association Foundation, National Association of Counties, and local leaders across nearly every state have been joining forces to:

  • Use data to understand where people fall through the cracks,
  • Divert people from jail when there’s no risk to public safety,
  • Deploy mobile crisis and co-responder teams that include mental health professionals,
  • Embed behavioral health treatment in jails, and
  • Create new accountability measures to track and improve outcomes.

Read about the impact counties have had, our priorities for the next decade, and how you can get or stay involved.

Then join us on August 14 to hear from the first state to launch a Stepping Up for Youth initiative. Learn how the Stepping Up framework has been adapted to support state and local leaders in their efforts to establish or expand early intervention, behavioral health screenings and services, and cross-system coordination between juvenile justice and behavioral health.
