Hi Guys,

I have an idea based on crowd-sourcing model - a website that allows people to start a movie script one scene at a time and allows other people to add their scenes to build up the story till the end. Each scene can have multiple alternatives written by different people.

Each contributor's name and profile will be tagged against the scene they created.

Visitors can LIKE or COMMENT against each scene.

The commercial model will involve:

- Selling of scripts to the movie industry with the website taking a percentage share of the sale value

-  Advertising on the site once we start generating sufficient traffic to the site

However, more than profitability, it will give us (as a team) the visibility in the press and other media which we can capitalize for our next venture which could be purely commercial. There is an off-chance that the website may be bought over by internet based companies that have better ideas for monetizing the traffic and usage.

We could start with the Kannada industry which badly needs better scripts. Kannadigas living abroad can be invited to start contributing so as to play a role in improving the state of Kannada cinema.

We could launch the website with basic features and add features as we grow - write a song, record a tune, etc.

Press-conferences and social media can be used initially to create publicity and to drive traffic and interest.

We should not be sitting and coding this website, but we hire a team of developers and we manage the project. Our time investment should not be more than 4 hours a week per person. One among us can take a more committed role to drive the initiative. The investment will be mainly in paying salaries to these developers and between us we could create a fund of 2-3 lakh rupees and complete the first launch in 3 months.

This could work. We only need to take care of plagiarism, how to manage access to complete script, etc. (what if script writers also become members and start copying member's work? :D) But those are only details.

The way I see this, we should focus on building a site that is targeted for acquisition. e.g. Facebook / LinkedIn / Scribd etc. We should make it attractive for such companies to buy us out with a large payment. So, our initial focus should be on building a community, get good scripts constructed online and make the first few script sales.

Except funds I can contribute at multiple levels - business planning, marketing, UX/UI design evaluation (even find right person to design the site), etc. This is right up my alley at multiple levels - so I can only contribute in skill. :)

Hmm.. I am in...I can contribute with writing scripts so that we have a good base to start-off with.. :)

But the critical part of funding to create the website? That's where I see a potential blocker for now..

Good idea. 

The success of this would depend on the participation of a good number of script writers. What would be the incentive for the script writers to spend so much of their creative effort without the fear of being plagiarized? Just trying to think from a script writer's perspective..

Individuals are not going to write whole scripts. Each person writes a scene, another person adds to it. It is similar to open source software model.

Most hobby writers do not have enough time or patience to write a whole script. But they are creative and come up with a few scenes.

The objective is to build a community that is so popular that when work is stolen, the community is given the benefit of doubt. We can also speak to a lawyer on precautions we need to take.

Or we use the classic use-case of apple - which went ahead to convert all of the illegal downloads to legal downloads through iTunes..  will explain a bit more when we catch up (most of you mngt experts might already know off it), its more or less like a small payment per the number of scenes you write, if that script is brought... this would serve as a booster/ motivation for the folks writing the scenes..
