Papago Golf Course is conveniently situated just a few minutes from downtown Phoenix though you would never be able to tell with the peace and seclusion provided by the course's location in Papago Park. The golf course sits at the base of Papago Buttes, past the rugged red rocks you can see Phoenix skyline. The course was designed by William Francis Bell, whom you may know for Torrey Pines in San Diego. The challenging layout features undulating greens framed with strategically placed bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding. Water hazards appear on a few holes as well. It's a tough but straightforward layout that is still playable for a range of skill levels. Since opening in 1963, Papago has hosted numerous events including the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and Phoenix Open Qualifying.
Had to laugh at the message going off on our cart on the #4 tee box saying we were 10 minutes behind pace - as if there was anything we could do about that. The walkers ahead of us that were over a hole behind never got that message.
Greens were fast but they had just been punched (in February?). Tee boxes were flat which was good. Bunkers had a decent amount of sand. Not much rough if you miss the fairway, everyone was hitting off dirt/rocks which is never fun, and there were 3 single digit handicaps in our group.
Carts had GPS but did not tell you the distance from the tee. No water bottles, bring your own. There were ball cleaners which I am figuring out is a rarity in AZ. The cart paths in a lot of areas were simply dirt, which meant driving through dust for anyone who wasn't the lead car.
The facility is impressive - fantastic bar and grill, driving range faced the mountains which was beautiful. Parking was a nightmare - not enough spaces for the golfers when an event was going on, people were creating their own parking spaces in the lot and down the road.
I love the lay out have played it many times. Sence it became ASUs home course it has been cleaned up. Only issue is price went up.
Still love it may not score as well as I would like but a great track.
Bunkers are the best I have played for a long time
Played here twice this week. Staff was great, clubhouse / restaurant was really good. Beverage cart came around frequently. Greens and Fairways are in great shape. I like this course will be playing it a lot this year.
For golfers looking to fit in an opening round on their arrival date of a golf trip, and for those looking to finish their trip with a quality round near the airport - it does not get any better than Papago! As a muni - this course has been listed as one of the top five in the country. Currently, the layout, conditioning and service rivals many of the top courses in the state. Papago is situated just a 5 to 10 minute drive from Sky Harbor Airport! This course is highly recommended by

Papago has been home to the Phoenix Open Qualifying, and has been awarded 4 stars by Golf Digest Places to Play. The layout is marked with desert transition areas that help to define the holes, and rolling, contoured fairways that are lined with palms, pines and other native trees. The renovation of the course included the removal of nearly 400 trees that were planted in the 1960s in an effort to promote turf growth and restore many of the course's original sight lines and views.
On property is a grass range that has recently been expanded plus two practice greens for putting and chipping. The clubhouse features a pro shop plus snack area that serves hot & cold sandwiches and other lunch items.
The green complexes are raised and well bunkered, with putting surfaces that have been restored to their original size and replanted with Bermuda Mini-Verde. Bermuda-Tiffway 419 has been installed on all sloped areas around the tees, greens, bunker and lakes; and Riviera-Bermuda has been planted on all fairways and tee boxes. All bunkers on the property were completely restored and returned to their original shape and contour. Twelve new bunkers were added throughout the course and some of the original bunkers were moved to accommodate the length of the modern game. There are no residential properties along the layout, and partial cart paths mean that golfers can drive on most fairways. This is a good walking course - and walking is allowed at all times, even on weekends.
If you are going to be in Phoenix for awhile, the Phoenix card is available ($50 fee and $30 annual renewal) and provides advance tee time reservations, discounted rates and promotional specials at all of the municipal courses. We are heading back to Phoenix for our biggest women's golf experience. This partner tournament will be held at Papago Golf Club from March 2nd through March 5th AND March 9th to March 12th!
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we will have some of our favorite golf instructors joining us to hold exclusive Desert Classic instructional clinics for all the participants. Get up close and personal with the guests, as they share some of their best tips from your swing to your mindset.
Golf Digest's leading golf fitness instructor, Andrew Hannon will be leading us in our pre-round warmups on the range each day. Get warmed up before every round as Andrew goes through some of his go-to stretches so you can feel fresh for your round!
Part of my vision with Compete Confidence Golf was to have an EPIC women's golf tournament each year. You can expect incredible golf, good food, amazing swag and next level entertainment. You should expect to make new friends and spend quality time with your old friends on the golf course!
If you are going to book a different hotel or VRBO, I would stay near Old Town Scottsdale, Arcadia or Biltmore neighborhoods. All those locations are within a 10-15 minute drive to the course and have lots of dining and entertainment options within walking distance.
Something to take note of, the Desert Classic schedule is JAM PACKED. We keep you busy from Sunday night shopping night all the way to the Awards Celebration on Wednesday evening. You won't be spending a ton of time wherever you chose to stay.
This tournament is open to all female amateur golfers with an active GHIN.
36 course handicap will be the maximum handicap used for the tournament.
Partners must have handicaps within 10 strokes of each other or the higher handicap player will play down to the adjusted 10 stroke difference handicap.
All tournament participants must be at least 21 years old.
Papago has an amazing restaurant and hopping bar. If you have a practice round later in the day, even if it's 9-holes, plan on eating right at Papago afterward. You should be able to get in at least 9 holes if your tee time is by 4:00pm.
