Friends:
I thought I would take another crack at getting a discussion going on this channel and ask: What non-Curatescape mobile apps do you like?
I was in the Canadian Rockies last week touring the Icefields Parkway. I really enjoyed the
Icefields Parkway GyPSy Tour app. It is a simple app that provided audio commentary as we drove:
"To your left, notice Pyramid Mountain. This mountain was named by Seymour Parks in 1887..."
Some of the features I liked were 1) because there is no cell service along the route, the app
downloads with all the content, 2) once you turn on the app it geolocates you with the GPS on your phone, and
relevant commentary autoplays when you get to an interpretive location, 3) the app knows if you are driving
north or south and plays different interpretive content for each direction, 4) the commentary itself is brief
and light, and includes history, natural history, and geology.
Mark and Erin tell me that future versions of Curatescape will have the ability to download content when or
shortly after users download the app. This is good news for those of us working in the American west!
I am currently having discussions about working with my students to develop apps for some national parks,
Indian reservations and historic trails with large segments that are out of cell range.
What about the rest of you--are there any apps that you like?
