Curatescape Friends:

I am not sure who is on this Gmail listserv so added a few folks in the CC. Please share promiscuously.

John Dichtl raised the idea of bringing together Curatescape users the day before the next NCPH to compare notes. Mark separately mentioned doing the same thing in Phoenix in January. I do hope we will do one or the other, I think we have a critical mass of projects with a lot to teach one another. Last night (in a valiant attempt not to grade papers!) I wrote down a few topics for such a meeting:

  • Finding copyright-free images
  • The different uses of audio
  • Building tours
  • Partnering in your community
  • Work flows
  • Raising money!
  • Publicizing your project
  • Training people to use Curatescape
  • Leveraging with social media
  • What improvements would we like to see in the platform (the Android interface is not a thing of beauty!)
It occurs to me that we needn't wait to get together in meat space, but could do a series of Google Hangouts. Maybe once a month, and record the sessions for those unable to attend. Anyone want to grab the lead on this?

Nice meeting many of you in Monterey, and thanks to Mark for the drinks!

I think an actual face-to-face THATcamp style meeting for Curatescape developers would be a great idea.  Can we begin planning one for Spring 2015?  In the interim, a virtual meeting would certainly be helpful.

I'm also really interested in getting together to discuss especially regarding improvements in the platform. We're currently applying for a couple big grants that I'm hoping to devote substantial to additional web development for Curatescape - it might be a good chance to chart out what each of our priorities are for future development and try to pool our resources as apporpriate.

I took Larry's list and created a quick outline in a Google Document that anyone can edit here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y18YOxLbhKhItg69V9f_FyIysefmMBo-QYDhRWWKUsk/edit?usp=sharing

I started sketching in a couple notes and ideas but maybe we could all start throwing some ideas or links to resources to discuss? Or that could even make a good way of guiding a virtual discussion? Google Hangout + writing up a set of shared resources at the same time?

What a great idea! And thanks for starting that document Eli – I added a few links where I thought they might fit.

For a face-to-face THATcamp style meeting, I’ll throw out Champaign-Urbana as a potential location as I’m happy to plan. If there’s a more appealing location I’m happy to help someone else with this if needed.

Hi all.
This discussion is fabulous. We should definitely plan for a meetings at the National Council for Public History meeting in Nashville next year.  Beyond that, Mark and I want to defer to our partner’s wishes and find ways that we can facilitate collaboration, conversation, and other interactions. We will do our very best to provide support and even find grant funding, if that’s how we could pay for us to work together. I’m thinking, in this vein, for example, of an NEH collaborative research grant in January.

I’m late to the party, but YES! I love this idea, too. We’re launching Reno Historical in just over a month, and already have benefited so much from sharing tips & experiences—and I know we will continue to do so. The more opportunities to pool wisdom, the better!

Here's a problem I'll throw out to the entire group. Our "business model" of working with fellow, under-funded public institutions and non-profits to create tours is now being copied by a start-up in New Orleans:

http://www.cultureconnectme.com/

This bit of free pr was published just before the latest spring festival in New Orleans: New Orleans Entrepreneur Week
http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2014/03/new_orleans_startup_aims_to_he.html

On a positive note, this group was not awarded the $50,000 prize awarded by a group of judges that included Archie Manning and chef Susan Spicer. (At least they didn't get Harry Connick, Jr., involved.) I'm accustomed to the many horrible producers of content that come and go, but this is the first that goes directly after our "customer base." This event brings in many VC people, and Walter Isaacson comes home to participate.

This relates in some way to Mark T.'s and Mark S.'s social media musings over the weekend re: visitor numbers for cities. Everyone wants to milk the hordes of convention visitors that come to NO each year. Has any one dealt with this sort of a business model? The terrible content created by the many crowd-sourced and wiki-sourced ones have not been an issue. Another app developer recently tried to shake down one of our partners for a $40,000 app, and that was not a problem.

This particular group does not seem capable of doing too much damage, but I am sure there will be others.

Best wishes, Michael

Hi, everyone -

Does anyone have experience creating adhesive decals promoting your Curatescape project, to be placed in the windows of featured buildings? We're getting encouragement to produce some in Reno and I'm wondering if anyone can share any tips & resources. Thanks!

Hi all, see this blog post for some print templates: http://curatescape.org/print-materials/

We did 4" x 6" vinyl window clings for each site in one neighborhood last summer (or, at least the ones with street-level windows/doors). I think the cost was something like $60 for about 20 distinct versions, each of which had a link (short-link and QR code) to the related entry on our site. Here's an example of what it looked like (with a simulated background): http://curatescape.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Curatescape_assets4.png

In hopes of kickstarting planning for a Curatescape Confab, as Larry termed it, I thought I'd second the motion and propose we begin making plans for the next NCPH in Nashville, April 15-18, 2015.  I believe the submission deadline for program-listed Workshops has already passed, earlier this month, but don't see why we can't plan our own meeting for April 14th.  Perhaps, an alternative to our own separate confab, there is a THATcamp already in the planning stages and we could join that?  I attended the one in Milwaukee at the NCPH a couple years ago and found it to be very helpful.

How shall we proceed?  Are there already plans in the works?

I hope to be at NCPH with a project from UNL so that or THAT would be an appropriate venue. :)

Is there any interest in a Curatescape users Facebook group? Probably a closed group? I am a member of several of these, including one that is devoted to digital interpretation in the national parks, and depending on the membership they can be useful.

It seems silly to wait a year to talk face-to-face about what we are doing in digital spaces.

I'm only tangentially connected to this group, of course, but it seems like Facebook groups are pretty poor places below and above a certain threshold of activity.

A monthly Skype or Hangout would probably be closer in spirit to an actual meeting.
