Partof the listening process for any car involves cycling through all the various listening modes and sound presets and the Porsche set-up is no different. There are five in total: Pure, Smooth, Live, Surround and Sound Enhance.

We kick things off with the Bose system and are pleasantly surprised. The level of integration between the speakers is excellent, with the system masking its subwoofer, yet still managing to deliver solid and weighty bass.

However, I can assure potential punters that the 082 is as robust electrically as it is physically. Its power reserves and high current capacity ensured hours of listening on my newer Maggies, with the amp showing no sign of losing steam.

The amp uses a circuit design that is based on symmetrical DC-coupled amplifier paths. A massive power supply with an 82.000 μF filter capacity and a 450 VA toroidal transformer allow the 082 to deliver high current continuously, no matter how difficult the load; a high damping factor means better control over a wide range of frequencies, especially the bass. Burmester rates the 082 at 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 150 watts into 4 ohms.

Burmester, by a coincidence, also provides the in-car sound system for those models and the 911, but I must admit I paid more attention to the car than the music. Can you blame me, with all those horses at my disposal on the autobahn? Still, something did register about the sound system.

The good: A substantial amp, physically and electronically, with performance to match. The range of features is impressive, while the build quality is impeccable. Placed in the right system, it is a feast for the eye and ear.

The ungood: Heavy, and thus not easy to move around. Pushed too hard with a low-sensitivity speaker, it can muddy up. Best with other balanced gear, when it sounds quieter and looks even cooler.

Sujesh Pavithran is an ardent fan of Magnepan and Apogee speakers, loves vinyl AND supports digital formats as he believes they will keep improving, has a yen for tubes and is a gadget-head (shamelessly encouraging consumerism in this sector). He has been reviewing hi-fi equipment and music since the mid-1980s, but occasionally wonders if he should have made a detour into motoring or photography instead.

much discussed topic. if still money available I would prefer in both models (cayenne & panamera) meanwhile the burmester. in my pana I have the bose, I find them good to very good in places. but could recently enjoy a perfectly adjusted for me burmester and I must say, yes the difference was clear.

I have been out of the subject for over 20 years as far as systems in cars are concerned. Thought that is no longer possible with all the thousands of CAN buses with which everything is controlled. But it's nice that something like this is still possible today.

I ordered my new one without Burmester. Just last week I had a replacement car with Burmester. Conclusion: The sound is minimally better. Is it 6'000.-sFr. better? Absolutely not. The absurd additional price does not justify the plus in sound quality at all.

Research investigating how subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) might reliably indicate impairments in objective cognitive functioning has produced highly varied findings, and despite attempts to synthesise this literature (e.g., Jonker et al. International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, 15, 983-991, 2000; Reid and MacLullich Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders, 22(5-6), 471-485, 2006; Crumley et al. Psychology and Aging, 29(2), 250-263, 2014), recent work continues to offer little resolution. This review provides both quantitative and qualitative synthesis of research conducted since the last comprehensive review in 2006, with the aim of identifying reasons for these discrepancies that might provide fruitful avenues for future exploration. Meta-analysis found a small but significant association between SCCs and objective cognitive function, although it was limited by large heterogeneity between studies and evidence of potential publication bias. Often, assessments of SCCs and objective cognitive function were brief or not formally validated. However, studies that employed more comprehensive SCC measures tended to find that SCCs were associated independently with both objective cognitive function and depressive symptoms. Further explicit investigation of how assessment measures relate to reports of SCCs, and the validity of the proposed 'compensation theory' of SCC aetiology, is recommended.

The Study Group for Risk Factors for Rheumatoid Arthritis was established by the EULAR Standing Committee on Investigative Rheumatology to facilitate research into the preclinical and earliest clinically apparent phases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This report describes the recommendation for terminology to be used to define specific subgroups during different phases of disease, and defines the priorities for research in this area. Terminology was discussed by way of a three-stage structured process: A provisional list of descriptors for each of the possible phases preceding the diagnosis of RA were circulated to members of the study group for review and feedback. Anonymised comments from the members on this list were fed back to participants before a 2-day meeting. 18 participants met to discuss these data, agree terminologies and prioritise important research questions. The study group recommended that, in prospective studies, individuals without RA are described as having: genetic risk factors for RA; environmental risk factors for RA; systemic autoimmunity associated with RA; symptoms without clinical arthritis; unclassified arthritis; which may be used in a combinatorial manner. It was recommended that the prefix 'pre-RA with:' could be used before any/any combination of the five points above but only to describe retrospectively a phase that an individual had progressed through once it was known that they have developed RA. An approach to dating disease onset was recommended. In addition, important areas for research were proposed, including research of other tissues in which an adaptive immune response may be initiated, and the identification of additional risk factors and biomarkers for the development of RA, its progression and the development of extra-articular features. These recommendations provide guidance on approaches to describe phases before the development of RA that will facilitate communication between researchers and comparisons between studies. A number of research questions have been defined, requiring new cohorts to be established and new techniques to be developed to image and collect material from different sites.
