PBE tips

Hi everyone,

I'm a former 2012 person so I thought I'd give you a few tips on the
upcoming PBE.
People messed up in the following areas on the DI test:

1) Give a solid recommendation. "I recommend _____." No options or
alternatives.
2) Don't over think the question or try to look at the big picture or
get fancy finding a more recent study than the one they're looking
for. What's the simplest answer? Just go with that. Sometimes they'll
give you patient-specific information which you can read through.
Picking out the important parts is the trick. They might not do that
on this test - maybe on the next one.
3) If given a choice between a study or guidelines, I'd find the
study. Guidelines are trickier than they look. I got docked because
the guidelines I picked weren't actually guidelines but a summary of
the guidelines. There was no way to tell unless you scrolled down into
the references and noticed that it referenced the true guidelines. Be
careful!
4) I quoted directly out of the abstract for rational and got all the
points. Still, in class this year they specifically said that the
rational should be the evidence for your answer so make sure you've
got that in there.

Believe it or not, (and I shouldn't say this until I pass everything)
but it is better this year. At least they went through some examples
in class this year and told you to make a solid recommendation. And
the library person teaching is much better at teaching it. We didn't
do med rec on the PBE last year so I can't comment on that. We did
nutrition/DI and a SOAP note/DI.
