to Cumberland Lodge 2012
Hello Everyone,
This is just to remind you that the payment for Cumberland Lodge is
due by tomorrow, Friday May 4th. Please get this to Chloe promptly!
With the boring financial stuff out of the way, it is time to think
about the fun bit - the programme - which we each need to participate
in planning. There are 7 sessions throughout the weekend. I have
pasted their 'model programme' below so you can see roughly how it
goes and we can start making a thread and finding out what themes,
issues or ideas we would like to discuss or materials we would like to
share, etc and who might like to run a session with who based on this.
It should be relaxed, fun and informal but also thought-provoking and
collaborative. No one is expected to give a lecture or anything scary,
but to prompt engagement and group activities - you can be as creative
as you want!
At our planning meeting a few weeks back we had a few ideas for
sessions that people may also be interested in, want to adopt, change
or which may just inspire you to make a completely different session.
Here's our stream of consciousness:
A treasure hunt in the gardens and grounds of the lodge (which are
extensive) - we have not come up with a theme, but liked the method!
A chaired debate over whether sociology should or should not be
politically engaged in progressive politics
Showing visual media, films
Visual research methods - how these can be used in social research
Public sociology (Buraway) - discussion of what public sociology means
for us.
How to deal with writer's block, processes of writing, relationship
between literature and sociology
We need to have an outline of the programme - who is doing what and
when - to send to Cumberland Lodge by early June. Of course we can
keep planning up until our departure, but let's start our
conversations and collaborations now.
Please let us know if you have any questions....
Thanks,
Anna, Christy and Tim

Please Note:
1. We emphasise the need to associate the programme with the purposes
of the Foundation (see Note 17).
2. A longer introductory talk may be arranged at a mutually convenient
time when a member of the Cumberland Lodge staff will provide a
history of the house and the Foundation.
3. Experience has shown that a panel session livens up a programme.
4. Speakers should be encouraged to plan their presentation so as to
allow a minimum of half an hour for general discussion - with students
given every opportunity to participate.
5. For the free afternoon on Saturday there is plenty of opportunity
for
` walking in the park, games, or visits to Windsor.
6. In the winter months, when days are short, a late Saturday
afternoon session is a good idea; less so in the summer when a full
afternoon in the Park, or in Windsor, is an attractive option.
7. It is essential to organise a session after dinner on Saturday
evening to avoid an aimless gap in your programme before the start of
the party.
8. On Sunday morning all members of the group are very welcome to
attend services at the Royal Chapel in the grounds of nearby Royal
Lodge. Holy Communion is at 08.30 (10.00 on the first Sunday of the
month) and Matins at 11.00. Those going to morning service will miss
the 11.00 session. It is advisable not to invite visiting speakers for
this session as few might attend. An alternative might be a 'poster
session' - or two sessions might be organised for Sunday afternoon,
leaving the morning free.
