Hi Janet

Thanks for forwarding this. No I had not seen it. I have also pushed this response onto the Cumberland Plain Psyllid Google group for the wider audience also.

Paul’s suggestion of felling and replanting the stands is quite unreasonable (let alone entirely against at least two major pieces of legislation). It worries me that someone with a reasonably important position would be advocating actions that are effectively illegal.

As to the ‘good news’ I would think that the UWS getting a sizeable funding injection from the Environment Trust ($400k) for research into the very issues discussed (resistant genotypes, tolerant taxa, stand and individual survivorship among other research focuses) would be good news. This continues from the work Aidan Hall has been undertaking (http://www.uws.edu.au/hie/people/postgraduate_students/current_postgraduate_students/aidan_hall).

I also found when I was preparing for the workshop that the research undertaken in recent decades shows that the tree water stress paradigm was identified to not always be the case for infestation incidents, with waterlogging in plantations being one of the situations in which it was (http://ro.uow.edu.au/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1769&context=scipapers). Typically research has produced inconclusive results (according to the text in that article referring to a paper by Koricheva et al. 1998 – others I cannot lay my hands on immediately). However, I think it is erroneous to say that the research was done years ago when it would seem, from web searches that the interactions remain a field of study at several institutions around Australia and overseas.

Regards, Greg

Subject: Re: Grey Box Psyllid Dieback in the Cumberland Plain

Hi Nicola
I have seen this decline of Grey Box as a contractor for Blacktown and Penrith councils (for the National Trust)
I did my PhD on Psyllids in Eucalytus dunnii plantations and am sorry to see how this major environmental problem has had so little attention. Especially as the flow-on effects will be expensive. Huge areas of Grey Box will never recover and will be dead within 2-5 years. The impact on soils,  weeds, birdlife and diversity, watertables and salinity is all unknown but likely to be considerable.

The research on psyllids was done years ago (1950's) and I can only assume that now the wheel is being reinvented. All psyllid case studies point to the same cycles of events: tree stress from either drought or inundation- psyllid population increase- tree decline. In all cases predators (birds) and parasitoids (wasps) are ineffective.
IMHO stem injection of insecticides is (was?) the least worse option.

Now, planning for species selection in restoration projects should be the order of the day. Restoration at the landscape scale is required, not reserve by reserve. Already you see huge weed problems emerging as canopies thin and abundant sunlight penetrates the (weedy) groundlayer.
Much of the existing stands should be felled, burned and replanted/ direct seeded, preferably before the soil seed banks are dominated by weed seeds.
Maybe there is some resistant Greybox genetic material out there?

One benefit will be the great business opportunities  available for arborists in western Sydney. There are so many dead trees that will be needed to to be removed from parks and residential areas.

is there any good news?
Cheers, paul

Kind Regards

Subject:        Grey Box Psyllid Dieback in the Cumberland Plain

Hi folks,

The HNCMA ran a forum in 2011 on the Grey Box Dieback in the Cumberland Plain, followed up last year by a second forum by OEH.

One of the outcomes of the forums was the need to develop an information package on Grey Box Psyllid Dieback. The HNCMA has been busy coordinating this with OEH, RBG, UWS and the tree management industry - the final result is the flyer attached (high res and low res options).

As originally agreed at the forum, this is a free publication and each agency will need to print, web host and distribute their own copies. Please feel free to print and distribute for your own uses also. Perhaps this could go on your website also, if relevant to your area?

The dieback has substantially weakened this winter, however the psyllids are still present and their origin and ecology are still unknown. The damage caused in many areas is substantial and this is very much a continuing concern. OEH and UWS are continuing their research - we'll keep you updated as this progresses.

Kind regards,
