Hi everyone,

Quick question: what do people know about self-actualization (from Maslow’s hierarchy of needs)? Does the academic research community take it seriously these days as a scientific construct? Has anyone used it in the context of an empirical study? If anyone can recommend strong literature reviews or experts on the topic, I’d be very grateful. Thanks!

Ian

Ian:

Coincidentally, my undergraduate arts entrepreneurship class was discussing Maslow and self-actualization just this week, although not in an empirical research context. I find it useful for explaining how an arts venture can help an artist meet the needs at both the top and the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy.

Although the term "self-actualization" isn't used explicitly, I also think you see the concept addressed indirectly in the research around arts education outcomes (especially in a higher ed context). There are others on the list who can likely address that more specifically.

All the best,
