Hi everyone,
Quick question: what do people know about self-actualization (from
Maslow's hierarchy of needs)? Does the academic research community take it
seriously these days as a scientific construct? Has anyone used it in the
context of an empirical study? If anyone can recommend strong literature
reviews or experts on the topic, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

Ian:
Coincidentally, my undergraduate arts entrepreneurship class was discussing Maslow and self-actualization just this week, although not in an empirical research context. I find it useful for explaining how an arts venture can help an artist meet the needs at both the top and the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy.
Although the term "self-actualization" isn't used explicitly, I also think you see the concept addressed indirectly in the research around arts education outcomes (especially in a higher ed context). There are others on the list who can likely address that more specifically.
All the best,

Re: literature reviews on the Maslow's hierarchy
A well-known cross-cultural sociologist G. Hofstede concluded (1980) that “the ordering of needs in Maslow's hierarchy represents a value choice - Maslow's value choice. This choice was based on his mid-twentieth century U.S. middle class values. First, Maslow's hierarchy reflects individualistic values, putting self-actualization and autonomy on top. Values prevalent in collectivist cultures, such as "harmony" or "family support," do not even appear in the hierarchy.”
I attach an article which will provide more illustrations.
Hope it is helpful,
Sincerely,
