Cult mentality is pervasive. You see it in the fringe groups. But
cult thinking is blended into mainstream society. It is there anytime
people believe uncritically what they are being told, and then put
their faith in something which is false.
Douglas Rushkoff is a writter who most impresses me with his insights.
He has a book Coercion, why we believe what they say.

Are you involved in any interesting and active Google Groups?
I believe that idolotry is part of the human condition, a kind of
concretized thinking, instead of a healty spirituality.
I believe we can do well by promoting our small groups together.

your group, along with ours there.
Also, I want to get into some other google groups, and I will promote
both our groups in there together.
Know of any good google groups?
The numberone rule in BS is secrecy. They really can be cruel to
people.

cyberspace, to feed their own words back at them.
My own interest in cults has spaned many many years. First, cults are
a kind of counter culture. People agree to cooperate together, to
surrender the exercise of some freedoms, to submit to some authority,
in exchange for solidarity and some other benefits.
Are these all cults? Probably not. But they tend to turn into cults.
Counter culture movements tend to turn into cults.
I'm knowledgeable of many of them. Rajneesh, Synanon, Est, Golden
Dawn, Knights Templars, Scientology. and more.
I think cult formation is one of the risks that is run when you try to
set up a couter culture group.
