He tells the story of how he got his strart. He was on some sort of
high school trip, in the 1960s. He was feeding money into a vending
machine to buy some junk food.
He saw a sign advertising an essay writting contest being held by the
Elks Club. The topic was supposed to be something like Patriotism.
Moore knew that the Elk's had zero black members. So he wrote an
essay lambasting them. His essay was the only one that actually said
anything.
The contest was judged by an out of town English prof. Moore won, and
got his name in the newspaper.
It all started there.
Think about it. Not everyone would have known about the Elks not
having black members. Not everyone would have been able to write such
an essay. Not everyone would have felt so strongly about it.
His story, in the way he tells it is like the call of Moses.
