Elitism, Heaven's Gate

The "cult" news landscape for March 2026 is dominated by major legal developments in doomsday cases, the emergence of new leads in missing person investigations, and shifts in how high-profile extremist groups are being prosecuted.

Major Legal Updates
• Shakahola Forest Massacre (Kenya): In February and March 2026, self-proclaimed pastor Paul Mackenzie faced additional charges related to the deaths of dozens more followers. Prosecutors are presenting evidence that his "Good News International Church" operated as a criminal enterprise. Mackenzie is accused of inciting hundreds of followers to starve themselves to death to "meet Jesus."
• The "Queen of Canada" Case: Charges were recently stayed (halted) against Romana Didulo, the leader of a QAnon-adjacent group that occupied a school in Richmound, Saskatchewan. Prosecutors cited a lack of evidence for a "reasonable likelihood of conviction" regarding intimidation charges following a 2025 raid, though charges could be re-initiated within a year.
• La Luz del Mundo (LLDM): Federal prosecutors in the U.S. are increasingly using the RICO Act (typically used for organized crime) against religious leaders. Naasón Joaquín García, already serving time for sexual assault, was recently hit with new racketeering and sex trafficking conspiracy charges.
Active Investigations & Missing Persons
• The Berkeley Cult Disappearance: St. Louis police are pursuing a new lead in the 2023 disappearance of six people (including two toddlers) linked to online cult leader Rashad Jamal. Investigators are currently serving a search warrant to TikTok to trace an IP address after a family member identified one of the missing women in a recent profile picture.
• Aum Shinrikyo Offshoots: In Japan, authorities remain on high alert regarding "Aleph" and other offshoots of the cult responsible for the 1995 sarin gas attacks. Recent reports suggest concerns over the founder's son potentially consolidating power within these splinter groups.
International Developments
• Japan & The Unification Church: Following the dissolution order in 2025, Japanese courts have begun ordering the church to pay significant settlements (recently $340,000 in one instance) to victims of "spiritual sales" scams.
• USCIRF 2026 Report: The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom released its 2026 annual report this month, highlighting "state-sponsored repression" and extremist violence in 29 countries, with new concerns raised about intensified crackdowns on independent faiths in Vietnam and Afghanistan.

"...Cults are often known to use ‘Elitism’ to create a sense of exclusivity and superiority among their followers. Here are some ways that cults may weaponize Elitism:
• Creating an “in-group” mentality: Cults often times emphasize that their members are part of a select group, often using phrases like “we’re the awakened ones” or “we’re the chosen few.”
• Demonizing outsiders: Cults may use language that portrays outsiders as inferior, ignorant, or even evil, reinforcing the idea that their group is superior.
• Emphasizing exclusivity: Phrases like “they don’t understand us” or “we move differently” or “They not like us” can create a sense of separation and exclusivity, making followers feel like they’re part of a special group.
• Fostering a sense of privilege: Cults may claim that their members have access to exclusive knowledge, spiritual truths, or experiences that others don’t have.
• Encouraging dependency: By creating this sense of superiority, cults can make followers dependent on the group for validation and self-worth."

People: 29 Years Ago, 39 Heaven's Gate Cult Members Died in Largest Mass Suicide in U.S. History. Here's What an Escapee Told PEOPLE in 1997
"It's been 29 years since 39 cult members killed themselves in the largest mass suicide ever in the United States. The Heaven's Gate cult suicide came as a result of years of systemic brainwashing and remains shrouded in mystery, all these years later.

An April 1997 PEOPLE cover story detailed how the group first came together in the spring of 1975 in Los Angeles, where Marshall Applewhite, "a onetime choirmaster from Texas, and Bonnie Lu Nettles, a former nurse, regaled a group of meditation enthusiasts with their belief that spaceships would someday arrive to carry away their spirits."

Applewhite and Nettles went by the nicknames Bo and Peep, urging their members to abstain from sex, alcohol and tobacco and leave their families behind.

Over the years, the group moved around: first putting down short roots in Oregon, with some 20 to 30 followers and later moving to Medicine Bow National Forest, Wyo., and then Bonny Reservoir, Colo. They also changed names — at one point going by "Human Individual Metamorphosis" and "Total Overcomers Anonymous" — before settling on Heaven's Gate.
