"In the U.S., about 1 out of 6 adults say they practice yoga, according to new survey data published Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
About 80% are practicing to improve their health, and some 30% are using it to treat and manage pain.
“Yoga is a complementary health approach used to promote health and well-being,” says Nazik Elgaddal, an IT specialist at the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics who co-authored a data brief on the topic.” The stretching and strengthening exercise has been shown to reduce stress and help with some types of neck and back pain.
The survey also found that women are twice as likely to do yoga than men – with more than 23% of U.S. women practicing it. Yoga is most popular among people who are Asian or White, though there are plenty of people who are Black, Hispanic or of other races doing yoga too. People with higher incomes were more likely to do yoga.
The survey did not distinguish between yoga done in person or online, notes Elgaddal, who takes yoga classes offered by her workplace on Zoom. It found that more than half of the respondents also meditate as a part of their practice.
The data comes from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey, and is published in a June 2024 data brief. Every five years, the NHIS includes questions on complementary health, including yoga.
A previous analysis showed that complementary approaches in the U.S. have grown in popularity over the past twenty years. Yoga experienced the largest increase in that time, going from being practiced by 5% of the adult population in 2002 to 16% in 2022."
"Researchers from The Australian National University and the University of Queensland have found evidence that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are more prone to developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study, published in iScience, indicates that even mild stress can trigger traumatic memories in those with autism, exacerbating core traits such as repetitive behavior. The research, conducted on mice, identified specific brain mechanisms underlying this heightened stress sensitivity.
Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by difficulties in social interactions, repetitive behaviors, and sensitivity to sensory inputs. Despite these well-documented traits, the impact of stress and trauma on individuals with autism has been relatively overlooked.
Previous studies have suggested that people with autism might be more susceptible to PTSD, given their altered fear conditioning and memory processing. However, the exact mechanisms remained unclear. The researchers aimed to bridge this gap, seeking to understand how stress affects those with autism at a cellular level and to provide insights that could inform better therapeutic approaches."
"The FBI is investigating a religious sect that's facing widespread allegations of child sex abuse. They're called the Two by Twos (2x2) or The Church with No Name - and there's a following here in the Bay Area.
72 miles south of San Francisco, in a remote isolated location of San Martin, a special meeting took place where a group of people preached their version of the gospel.
It's a non-denominational Christian religious sect that's been around since the late 1800s. It was founded by Scottish evangelist William Irvine. Historical records suggest it wasn't until the early 1900s, the ministry set roots in the Bay Area.
"It's a very persuasive type of religion," said former member Michael Day.
"How would you describe this organization?" ABC's Stephanie Sierra asked.
"They use fear and manipulation, they manipulate people and the fear of the Lord to control people," said LaNette Burrage Flanigan, another former member. "They tell you, we are the only true way."
The Two by Twos are often referred to today as "The Truth" by its followers. According to the ministry's doctrine, this is the only way to find true salvation.
"Do you think they're being truthful?" Sierra asked.
"No, they're not," said Flanigan, a former member who says some members of her family were victims of child sex abuse. "I'm just broken. I could cry right now, it makes me sick."
"His type was small framed brunette girls," said another former member Sheri Autrey, who identifies as a survivor of child sex abuse.
In February, the FBI announced it was investigating the ministry and seeking victim information following allegations of child sexual abuse reported across the U.S.
Victim advocacy organizations report allegations across the world.
"If they didn't talk to God's true people, his chosen people, they're going to hell," Autrey said she was told by members of the ministry. "It was brainwashing from such an early age."
"What specifically do they do?" Sierra asked.
"They make you scared, they make it a scary place to leave," said Flanigan.
