Consider how many states of mind you experience in the average day…think of how you plunge into one reactive emotion after the next…anxiety, joy, impatience, desire, anger…notice how you can smile and laugh and then in mere minutes, find yourself irritated at something else…welcome to the circus of your mind…the purpose of [this exercise of being aware] isn't to stop all this; [It] is merely a matter of noticing these changes…seizing to grasp at them and identify with them [making them your identity, even if only temporarily]…recognize these states of mind for what they are; temporary appearances in consciousness.
