Ifwe look at the first image below, we see someone who is wearing a blouse that fits more or less into what we consider lolita today, paired with the same MILK skirt from the lolita spread in Cutie. In the center, the dot print OP and more importantly, the apple gingham print skirt are both from MILK. While the skirt might not read as current lolita, it does read as being something we might see from Emily Temple Cute, which was also considered a lolita brand in the early days. And on the right, we see quintessential old school lolita looks, and the look on the right cites MILK again. Note the deep tucks at the bottom of the sax skirt and the open work between the tiers. These features are quite common in Kaneko-kei style pieces, but in this case, this is clearly lolita. (The girl in cream on the left in the last image is wearing Jane Marple).
Around 2017-2018-ish, I started to see a trend with Chinese indie brands where there were these solid colored classic pieces that had heirloom details, and longer skirts. Some had front button details like these pieces from A-Sauce and others, like this little Dipper OP were just very classic. And, pieces like this have kind of always existed to some degree, I had a set with a top and two laying front button skirts from Dear Celine from about 2012? but there was for sure an increase. Also an increase in aprons.
And Petite Bouquet which also got a re-release. I think the contrasting patterns (floral and gingham) and the red colorway especially, really invokes that layering that we see with Pink House. However, interestingly, the layers are fake.
And there is a Tablier (31,800円) which they actually call a tablier. And yes, they have release one or two items they called Tabliers before, but never quite like this, and never paired with something that looks so much like something PH would put out.
What are your thoughts on the Kaneko-kei influence trend? Love it? Hate it? Want to see more of it?
Also, I realize I packed a bunch of supporting info into this post. Just out of curiosity, was this helpful, or too much stating of the obvious to you?
Thanks for this post. I really enjoyed it! I collect BJDs, and Volks has always been a doll brand that is highly lolita-adjacent, with some official BTSSB collabs in the past, as well as many lolita-styled outfits for the dolls. In 2019 and again in spring 2022, Volks has done collaborations with Pink House, releasing two pairs of dolls dressed in Pink House outfits (with the corresponding human-sized outfits available from Pink House). The dolls this year, 2022, are marketed as celebrating 40 years of Pink House.
Lolinda was one of the very first steakhouses to design its menu with shareability in mind, encouraging guests to curate a menu family-style. In addition to our small plates, at the heart of this experience is the Asado Mixto, a classic combination of traditionally wood fire-grilled Argentinian meats meant to be accompanied with a variety of sides, as well as the Guacho, a prime bone-in ribeye for two.
It was around this time in the mid-nineties when I started hosting some of my female students at my house for a private class. Here, we talked about life as women under the regime and discussed controversial Western works of literature, like Lolita, Pride and Prejudice, and The Great Gatsby. At this time, living in Iran, we felt so cut off from the world. Under the regime, it was very difficult to leave Iran, it was very difficult to get visas to go to different places. So, Iranians connected to the world through imagination and ideas, books, films, music, and through art.
PRH: You discuss Lolita, of course, and Daisy Miller, The Great Gatsby, and Pride and Prejudice in Reading Lolita in Tehran. If you were to do this book club today, would you change any of those titles?

House Lolita was a Great House so new that it did not exist prior to the War. As the name suggested, it was Lolita's house. She was its only member. In the early days of the House, Lolita attempted to recruit her sister. Allied with Tracolix, and by association with the Sontarans, House Lolita betrayed them both when it destroyed the Eleven-Day Empire. Lolita refused to allow any other lifeform to join her house. She claimed that the places were reserved for her future children, who, like her, were timeships. By that point, fifty-one years into the War, House Lolita had begun to produce a second generation and its prestige and political power had been so bolstered by its defeat of Faction Paradox that it received approval for the changes the House was making to 18th century history. Lolita predicted that the final confrontation between House Lolita and the survivors of Faction Paradox would take place in that time period.

In the early 1950s, the Nationalist Party began a series of revolutionary actions, including the 1950 Jayuya Uprising against American presence on the island. They conducted these attacks to protest the false and misleading claims by the United States government and Luis Muoz Marn that Puerto Rico would no longer be dominated by the United States. As part of this initiative, Pedro Albizu Campos ordered Lebrn to organize attacks in the United States, focusing on locations that were "the most strategic to the enemy." Lebrn led a group of nationalists that attacked the United States House of Representatives in 1954.
She was convicted, found guilty and incarcerated as a result. Lebrn remained imprisoned for 25 years, until 1979 when Jimmy Carter issued commutations to the group involved in the attack.[1] After their release in 1979, the group returned to Puerto Rico, where supporters of Puerto Rican independence received them warmly. During the following years, Lebrn continued her involvement in pro-independence activities, including the protesting the existence of a United States Navy base at Vieques. Her life would be subsequently detailed in books and a documentary. On August 1, 2010, Lebrn died from complications of a cardiorespiratory infection.
Lebrn (birth name: Dolores Lebrn Sotomayor [note 1]) was one of five siblings born in Lares, Puerto Rico to Gonzalo Lebrn Bernal and Rafaela Soto Luciano; the other four children were Aurea, Augusto, Gonzalo Jr. and Julio. Lebrn was raised in Hacienda Pezuelas in Pezuela, a barrio in Lares.[2] Gonzalo Lebrn worked as the hacienda's foreman earning a salary of $30 a month. The owner allowed to live in a "small house" and also permitted the family to plant produce.[3]
In Pezuela, Lebrn began her education in a small community school.[4] Early in her life, Lebrn contracted pneumonia when she accidentally fell into a gutter that was full of water. As a consequence of this illness, she grew with a frail body and was unable to keep up with the constant activities of her brothers without feeling fatigue.[5] She developed an introverted and contemplative personality, often spending time admiring nature around the hacienda.[5]
From Pezuela the family moved to Mirasol, also in Lares, where Gonzalo Lebrn administered a hacienda owned by Emilio Vilellas. There Lolita received a better education and attended a local public school.[6] When Lebrn completed the sixth grade she attended the Segunda Unidad Rural, a middle school located in Bartolo, an adjacent barrio.[7] She concluded her formal public school education in the eighth grade.[8]
Lebrn had uncommonly good looks and when she was a teenager won first place in the annual "Queen of the Flowers of May" beauty contest held in Lares. Although her father was an atheist, Lebrn was baptized in the Catholic faith when she was fourteen years as were her other siblings.[9] During the baptism celebration she met Francisco Matos Paoli, who became her first boyfriend.[10] Paoli and Lebrn wrote letters to each other in which they exchanged the poetry which they wrote.[11] According to Jossianna Arroyo, Lolita wrote "more mystical poetry, centered on what she called 'visions' filled with religious symbolism."[12] Paoli's family opposed their relationship because they considered Lebrn a jbara (peasant). Her father also opposed this relationship and ordered her to stop writing Paoli. However, they both continued to write each other until Paoli moved out of the city.[13]
Lebrn eventually moved to San Juan, where she studied sewing and continued her correspondence with Paoli.[14] She felt duty bound to return to Lares because her father was severely affected by tuberculosis.[15] The family was forced to abandon the house in the hacienda, but Ramn Santiago later provided them with a new house.[16]
