Hello everyone,

Since we introduced a Slack forum a few years ago, most discussions are now happening there. The traffic on this list has been significantly reduced.

We now have roughly 10 threads per month, while 3 years ago it was about 30 per month. At the same time, Cucumber adoption has doubled ca every 18 months.

As many of you already know, SmartBear acquired Cucumber Ltd last year. SmartBear has a forum platform called "SmartBear Community" where people discuss the various products in their portfolio.

I'd like to run an experiment:

* Make this list read-only for 2 months.
* Put up various sign posts directing people to https://community.smartbear.com/ (there will be a Cucumber link there soon)

After the experiment we'll evaluate whether or not to make this a permanent move.
But before we do this, I'd like to get some feedback from you and listen to any questions you might have about this experiment

Take care,
Aslak Hellesøy

State it as a scenario where the user persona is someone who's supported an open source platform for a decade and doesn't want to wade thru commercial tool marketing.

I'll state it as what it is:

SmartBear wants to consolidate forums on a single platform.
At the same time, I (the Cucumber lead) want to have a forum with a better UX/UI than google groups.

Cheers,
Aslak

Aslak this made md sad. No customer in any scenario. No user in any user scenario. But, especially "as the lead I say so". Is it time to fork Cucumber like what happened with Hudson when Oracle bought sun? Can we keep it true open source?

I've moderated this list with Aslak for over a decade.

I've just been to the smart bear community. I have to say I'm not a big fan of the UX/UI and I don't think I would see myself using the mailing list anymore if it moved there. The thing with Google is you can work with all your groups/mail lists from one place, so I can deal with Cucumber, Capybara, RVM, Sinatra etc etc and read my email all from one place.

I just don't see that I would ever bother to go to smart bear to help anyone. Its just too much faff to get there, which is a shame.

Slack has some good conversations on it, and I use Slack for work every single day. However I don't think it works that well for Cucumber, there is to much noise and conversations are hard to follow even with threads, knowledge gets list so I don't really use that.

I would like for this list to stay for now. Aslak can make his new list on Smart Bear and then we see what happens. I think the SB list should be presented as an alternative, not a replacement. However for this to happen there is one issue that needs addressing ... moderation.

Aslak does the bulk of the moderation on this list and has done for even longer than I've been doing it. We can't expect him to continue to do that when he really wants discussions to take place on SB. I'm certainly not willing to take on moderation on my own, and will not moderate this list every day, so we need new moderators if we are to keep the list open, someone who will check the list every day. Any volunteers?

If we don't get any volunteers for moderation then we will have to go ahead with Aslak's suggestions. So if you want to keep the list open, volunteer! This list need YOU!

All best

Andrew

So Tim would you be willing to volunteer as a moderator, anyone else interested in helping out?

Aslak,

I'm interested (intrigued) by Cucumber, but have not been able to actually do much with it yet.  Lots of inertia on my part, I guess, but I've enjoyed and learned a lot, by following discussions about the open source project.  I don't do Slack, yet.  E-mail is more my speed for this kind of thing, I guess.

Does SmartBear Community allow e-mail monitoring, like Google Groups?  Or, do we have to go there and navigate to see what's new?

Thanks.
