Dear
Charter member,
The recent rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) has been
increasingly impacting our daily livelihoods. From personal
counsel to job aids or mindless entertainment, they promise to
substantially change the benefit we obtain from computers. OSGeo
and its projects are no exception, to a good extent a new era
seems dawning to open source in general. We read and hear
anecdotal evidence of the ways in which LLMs are changing how
charter members work and the general implications for open
source software.
To better understand the reach of LLMs and their implications
the OSGeo Board of Directors is launching a survey directed at
all Charter members. Whether you are a PSC member, a code
contributor, a translator or a user, we wish to hear from you.
The survey intends to identify how LLMs are changing the way
individual members work and how they may be impacting the
regular functioning of OSGeo projects.
We hope the results of this survey can guide the OSGeo Board
enacting new procedures, guidelines or new infrastructures, to
address eventual concerns and fully harness the power of these
novel tools.
You will soon receive an invitation to participate.
The survey shall be open to the 10th of May.
Warm regards,
Jeroen Ticheler
President of the Board of Directors of OSGeo
