.srf (surfer) files -- & ArcMap

Hi CUGOS,

R. Andre told me I might be able to find someone who knows about .srf files in CUGOS world. I have never used/heard of .srf files. My former intern has emailed me about having "contours" (vector?) files in .srf format that "won't load in ArcMap". I have emailed him for confirmation (really...vector? contours?)...but I was wondering if off-hand anyone new anything about "contours" that come in .srf format -- and loading it into ArcMap.

I think this file is probably from http://www.goldensoftware.com/products/surfer  and can't be directly imported into ArcMap.  Surfer exports to shapefile I think. 

A quick look at http://gdal.org/ogr/ogr_formats.html and a search of the GDAL/OGR archive doesn't turn up anything so OGR probably doesn't read it.  It looks like GDAL can read the raster data from Surfer (or at least some versions of it), http://gdal.org/formats_list.html.

I don't know much about surfer or the file format other than some limited work with it years ago.

It looks from this, http://downloads.goldensoftware.com/guides/Surfer10Guide.pdf, that the .srf is a "container" file that can contain multiple file formats, including "boundary files", which sound like vectors to me.
