The story follows a young man named Mo Fan, and his journey to become one of the strongest mages in the world. He is constantly fighting in dangerous situations, with foes usually surpassing him in strength. These battles allow Mo Fan to breakthrough his inner barriers to awaken higher levels of magic, usually helping him to overcome his challenges.
The web novel focuses heavily on the development of Mo Fan's abilities. Each story arc concludes with Mo Fan profiting either magical equipment or Money, which allows him to strengthen his magical abilities. The story is very descriptive about the various elements and the state of the world.
The first arc starts off with explaining Mo Fan's current situation, both personally and with his family. It covers his journey of being a Novice Tier Magician at the Tian Lan Magic High School. Mo Fan's Dual Awakening natural talent is revealed when he awakens two elements at the novice level awakening, Fire and Lightning. Mo Fan keeps his natural talent a secret and only shows his fire element to the public. He also discovers that he his Dark Talisman necklace is a very special Evolving Magic Tool which can devour the energy of other magic tools and energy sources to evolve into a higher quality magic tool. This tool speeds up the rate of cultivation.
He joins a Hunting Squad under the alias Fan Mo, in which he uses only the element of lightning. He does this so that he can earn money and gain experience fighting Magic Beasts, hoping to gain a soul essence to evolve the Dark Pendant.
He becomes a rival to Mu Bai, vying for the position as the strongest magician in their age group. Mo Fan also clashes with Mu Zhuo Yun, the father of Mu Ning Xue, due to an incident when Mo Fan was a child and kissed Mu Ning Xue. The Mu clan were outraged and took out their anger on Mo Jiaxing. Mo Fan therefore establishes a duel with Yu Ang, the foster child of Mu Zhuo Yun, where the winner gets access to the Underground Holy Spring to cultivate for 7 days. Mo Fan also demands the Mu Zhuo Yun apologize to his father for beating him.
During the duel, Yu Ang displays the 3rd stage of the Novice Tier Ice magic, which is outstanding for that age. He is suppressing Mo Fan and it appears he is going to gain an easy victory, until Mo Fan unleashes his Fire element, which is also at the 3rd stage of the Novice Tier. His fire element easily overcomes the Ice, and begins to put pressure on Yu Ang, who uses special magic boots to escape. The fire still catches Yu Ang and is burned, however he reveals fire resistant magical armor, proving that the duel was rigged and Mo Fan didn't have a chance. Mo Fan surprises everyone present by revealing his lighting element, which is also at the 3rd stage of the Novice Tier. This magic destroys the armor and defeats Yu Ang. All the spectators are bewildered by what the had just observed, knowing that they just witnessed a special mage with a bright future,
After winning the fight, Mo Fan gets Mu Zhou Yun to publicly apologize to Mo Jiaxing. Later as Mo Fan prepares to enter the holy spring, he goes shopping with Xin Xia and is given a hand's worth of fire bombardment cards by Tang Yue, which would allow a newly broken through mid tier fire mage to immediately cast magic without having the necessary cultivation to control the new 42 additional stars.
When he goes to the Holy Spring, he is greeted by the principal, Mu Zhou Yun and his city hunting team captain before being lead inside. While simultaneously, we see a guard of the holy spring speak with scientists analyzing the liquid drunk by the evolving one eyed wolf from the previous chapter. While at the same time we see some soldiers on patrol beyond the city limits, were they are all killed simultaneously but with 2 light mages being able to release a flare in time. With the fortress seeing this, the soldiers request to raise the alert level to orange, but Zhang Kong foregoes protocol and immediately issues the Blood Red Alert.
While the Blood Red Alert was being issued, monsters had already appeared in town and mass panic ensues. When the monsters reach the holy spring, Mo Fan is evacuated along with the holy spring (stored in a bigger on the inside bottle). When it is assumed that the Black Vatican is behind the attack, Mo Fan is entrusted the Holy Spring as he wouldn't stand out compared to the military and the Holy Spring guards. When Mo Fan returns to school, he finds it under-siege, with the surviving students and teachers setting up a expedition to reach the fortress outside of town.
The survivors divide themselves into 2 groups, an advance group composed of the schools best students and a guiding teacher, with the rest of the students following behind by a kilometer under the guard of the schools teachers. They immediately loose on of the wind mages that was send to recon and the entire group now finally realities that it has gotten real. When they reach the forest in front of the fortress, they are confronted by the summoning master of the military, he reveals himself as a member of the Black Vatican. Demanding Mo Fan hands over the spring, but Mo Fan feeds it to his necklace instead. A fight breaks out, which results in Mu Bai killing the summoner, but the team loses another one of their own, Zhang Xiou Hou's girlfriend.
Mo Fan confronts Zhang Kong on how this could have happened and Kong apologizes, but loses it when he learns Mo Fan destroyed the Holy Spring. Kong later departs to the front lines with his soldiers to face the leader of the monster attack, a commander level winged wolf. Mo Fan then looks around the fortress to find his family, only to find his father. He then resolves to rescue his sister when it was revealed that her high school was the point of origin for the monsters.
He finds her hiding in a freezer in the local mall but is confronted by Yu Ang and an entire mob of Black creatures, which forces Mo Fan to retreat. When he sees Xin Xia almost freezing to death on the security cameras, he manages to break through into mid-tier fire and uses one of his fire cards to destroy all of the Black creatures and forces Yu Ang to retreat. He rescues his sister and appropriates a motor cycle to support the city hunter team in sealing the breach into the city, solving the crisis.
With the City of Bo being considered a lost cause to rebuild, all of the people are offered shelter in other cities, with the Mo family choosing Shanghai, as it is home to the Pearl Magic University, the second best university in the country. While on the way, Mo Fan makes a joke about his lack of knowledge about magic and his believe in technology (to disguise the fact that he was born in a world of technology and not one of magic). In the process he managed to offend a magical historian of the Pearl University sitting nearby. Jiaxing managed to calm him down and Mo Fan managed to make him reveal that entry into the university is almost impossible except for shadow, curse and summoning mages.
He was later told that the students from Bo are set back a year in their education, meaning that Mo Fan has to wait a whole year before he could attend the university. While breaking through into mid-tier lightning, he notices that the holy spring has improved his loach, with novice tier cultivation being improved by a factor of 4 and mid tier cultivation by a factor of 2.5. He is then contacted by Tang Yue who requests his aid in a matter, in exchange for more fire and lightning cards.
Tang Yue informs Mo Fan that she has been tailing a known criminal that uses curse magic to kill peoples souls for fun and could use some backup. When traveling to the point of ambush along some hot and dried up farms, they hear a group of hunters talking with one of them of stating that this warm state could only be caused by a fire spirit species. Tang Yue hears this and uses shadow magic to hide both herself and Mo Fan in a nearby location where they could see the spirit species, however another hunting team was already present. A fight breaks out and Mo fan observes both sides bombarding each other with novice tier magic to cover on of their own casting mid-tier magic, with Mo Fan amazed at their skill and teamwork. When one side was routed, the criminal made his appearance and activates his trap, a mid tier Curse that kills the souls of the surviving hunter team. Tang Yue tells Mo Fan to stay down and out of sight. Tang Yue walks out of hiding and confronts the criminal, but instantly falls to her knees and the criminal bursts out laughing, stating that this trap wasn't for the hunters, it was for her.
After revealing that he managed to slip Tang Yue an aphrodisiac when they were at the same diner the previous night, Tang Yue managed to release mid tier fire magic, but it only has the effect of destroying the criminal's armor and Tang Yue collapses again. Mo Fan releases mid tier fire magic but the criminal uses a water shield to intercept the attack, which Mo Fan counters with mid-tier lightning, killing the criminal instantly.
Mo Fan visits the magic association head quarters to awaken his next element(s), where he awakens the shadow element and the summoning element. He decides to use the summoning element to enter university and keep shadow as another trump card. On the day of his entrance examination, he is required to show the skill of his creature versus a prospective earth magic student, Luo Song. Mo Fan decides to use this moment to make his first summoning, which turned out to be a summoning wolf, impressing the judges. The earth mage finds himself outmatched and tries to activate mid tier ice magic, which leads to Mo Fan activating Mid Tier lighting magic. Dean Xiao interferes in the fight and accepts both their entry into the university.
Every year, the University allocates resources to each elemental department for distribution to it's students. A competition is also held every year between the 1st year students at Pearl Magic University. The Summoning Department students must be able to defeat a combined total of 100 students from various other departments. Including Mo Fan, there are 7 total summoning mages who can participate, against over 1000 combined first year students from the other elemental departments. If the other departments can defeat all of the summoning mages before they have tallied 100 total students defeated, they will take all resources away from the summoning department to distribute between themselves. This is seen as a very difficult task due to the low number of summoning mages, however the majority of the first year students can only cat Novice Tier magic. Against the servant level beast, they are severely disadvantaged, however they can form teams and go to battle together.
