When Haruhi Suzumiya's emotions become unbalanced, closed space is created in a limited area as a way for her to release her anger and frustration through creatures called celestials. It is the duty of an 'Agency' esper to remove the celestials, which destroys the space.

Esper Itsuki Koizumi pointed out that Haruhi's depression does not cause closed space, only frustration. He asked Kyon to avoid doing anything which would trigger Haruhi to create closed space (in other words, keep her happy and entertained).

Koizumi believes that if the closed space is not shut down, reality can be permanently altered in the area, and believes that Haruhi may in fact have altered the entire world one or more times previously.

There are only three times in the series that Haruhi's closed spaces are shown to Kyon: once when Itsuki Koizumi shows him his powers as an esper, once when Kyon and Haruhi wake up in one at school (having seemingly been teleported there), and once when Kyon found himself in a combination between Haruhi and Sasaki's spaces, which were "at war" with one another. The second case was particularly unusual, as neither normally could enter closed space without esper assistance. Kyon went to sleep at his house but woke up at school, along with Haruhi. The space was different than normal; Koizumi was only able to enter when given power from the other espers, and even then could not last there long.

After Kyon resolved the school closed space situation by "calming" Haruhi's frustration, closed space occurred only rarely. The next incident occurred when Haruhi got frustrated by losing a baseball game, but it was resolved when the SOS Brigade pulled off an unlikely victory. Haruhi specifically did not create closed space after fighting with Kyon in The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya because she was feeling depression rather than anger.

Kyon professed not to care if Haruhi lost a video game duel during The Day of Sagittarius, saying she would need to learn her lesson one day. Koizumi took this as a sign that Kyon trusted her not to create closed space in such an eventuality.

After Haruhi met Sasaki during spring break, however, Haruhi began creating much closed space again because Sasaki introduced herself as Kyon's "close friend". However, the celestials did not attack, acting as if they were in a daze. The 'Agency' still opted to destroy them.

In the α timeline, the incidence of closed space decreased; Koizumi believed this was because Haruhi planned on adding first-year students to the Brigade, and had her mind on things other than Sasaki.

In the β timeline, they also decreased. Koizumi believed this was due to her worries over Nagato's illness. However, he was wary of making a mistake; the celestials could be marshaling their strength instead. Koizumi believed that avatars accelerated the process of creating sealed reality.

As the timelines merged, so did the two versions of closed space. Despite Haruhi's captivity at the hands of Fujiwara and Kuyou Suou, Haruhi's closed space still formed, as she had somehow "split" herself into two, with Yasumi Watahashi acting as Haruhi's "other half" and generating the closed space anyway.

Sasaki creates an alternate version of closed space, in which the world is entirely white or clear sepia/cream and it encloses the entire world, along with the fact that there are no celestials. However, they are devoid of any other change at all. Esper Kyouko Tachibana was able to show this to Kyon just by holding his hand. The two did a "spirit walk" around the space until they returned to their original positions. They had only held hands for ten seconds in the real world, but the trip seemed much longer.

As a Moments subpage, all spoilers are unmarked as per policy. You Have Been Warned.

  • Haruhi. Just... just Haruhi. The fact that the world could be rewritten or destroyed on the subconscious whim of a teenage girl is bad enough, and Haruhi isn't exactly a glowing example of one. There's a damn good reason that the ones who know about her powers try to keep her from knowing about them, because if her subconscious is enough to noticably warp reality, who knows what she might do if she knew about her power and used it consciously?
  • Pretty much any and every scene in the anime with Ryoko Asakura.
  • The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya where Asakura actually succeeds in stabbing Kyon in front of a freaking-out Nagato. But that's not the worst of it. Asakura is in full-blown yandere mode, splattering blood on Nagato's face and actually goes over to finish Kyon off with the Psycho-like music playing in the background at full volume. And then she just happens to lean down right into Kyon's face. What makes this scene so terrifying is that when she does lean into Kyon's face, it's done through his point of view. In other words, it's like she's looking down at us. And those emotionless eyes and smile don't help at all.
  • This is made even moreso once you realize that this particular Ryoko Asakura isn't actually the same Asakura from Melancholy and had actually spent the entire previous part of the film acting as a genuinely nice and caring person, making the entire reveal at the end so much more surprising for some. Either that or she's even more of a psychopath than the real Asakura.
  • There's a part where she spins around and splatters some of Kyon's blood all over Nagato's face.
  • Even the quiet scenes with her in Disappearance. The slow-mo walk into the classroom and totally innocuous behaviour are kind of disturbing. Given Kyon's reaction, the whole thing plays like he ran into a serial killer at the grocery store. And because it seems like everyone is different here, he has to adjust to someone who stabbed him in another timeline sitting behind him in class.
  • Turned up to eleven in the preview of volume 10: Being trapped between two beautiful girls? Nice. When the girl behind your back holds a knife on your throat, while she prevents the one before you from bashing your face in? Of course, as the Only Sane Man, Kyon was scared out of his skin.
  • The Remote Island arc ends up being this for the majority of the second episode. After spending most of the day in a fun relaxing vacation, the group end up faced with Koizumi's uncle seemingly dead, and his brother missing. And it is not played for laughs, as everyone, including the usually flippant Haruhi is genuinely horrified at the realization that there might be a real murderer on the island, and while in the middle of a horrible storm that ensures that no one would be able to leave. Haruhi takes the entire ordeal very seriously, and while hiding in a cave after falling from the cliffside, she seriously ponders the evidence they have so far on the matter. She then comes to what seems to be the Awful Truth: That it was Kyon, Koizumi, and the butler who accidentally killed Koizumi's uncle by smashing the door down, driving the knife into his heart by mistake. While the ending reveals the reality is not so grim, it's telling just how bad the situation has degraded that Haruhi would rather try to hide the horrible truth she thinks she found out in order to spare her friend's feelings.
  • Yuki's And I Must Scream throughout Endless Eight. It doesn't hit you until you think about the concept of being trapped in a loop for over 595 years, without being able to express discontent, or even inform the others early on to make it end sooner, because her superiors won't allow it.
  • The events in Disappearance happened because Yuki wound up developing emotions. By the end of the movie, her emotions are purged and everything is back to normal... Or so you think until you see The Stinger, where Yuki observes a small boy getting a friend a library card. It's a cute moment, which serves as a Call-Back to a point earlier in the movie where, in the alternate timeline, Kyon had gone out of his way to do the same for Yuki, which, in that timeline, was how they first met (in the original timeline, Kyon had gotten Yuki the card just to get her out of the library). Cue a chill down your spine as you realize "Oh shit, Yuki's developing emotions again!"
  • The Shinjin/Celestials. They're bizarre titans that only appear in closed space, and exist only to wreck everything. If the Organization doesn't get rid of them, the closed space spreads, and threatens to overtake the world.
  • The scene in one of the episodes of Sigh, where Haruhi drugs Mikuru to make a scene in her movie. The scene was heading in a direction where Koizumi was going to kiss her. We knew before that Haruhi had some messed up morals, but this was going a bit too far, considering that this girl could control the universe. Her power mixed with this particular situation is a bit off-putting. Imagine how far it could have gone had Kyon not called her out for it.

The user can create a new reality which overlaps reality/space that already exists and become the god of their closed space. Closed spaces take in a number of elements from the real world and may only have a few differences, with such examples being the sky changing into a different color than normal or the presence of unearthly beings seemingly living within the closed space. The user can trap anyone who enters a closed space within their reality or restrict certain people from entering and leaving.

If someone were to enter a closed space from point A in the real world and traveled to point B within closed space, they would end up at the real-world version of point B. To any outsiders, it would seem as though they have somehow teleported. For example, if someone entered Closed Space while on top of a building then walked downstairs onto a parking lot and left Closed Space, they would end up in the real-world version of the parking lot in the exact same location. Since Closed Spaces are layers of the real world, any damage done to a Closed Space has the potential to also damage its real-world counterpart, and vice-versa. Usually, Closed Space cannot be seen from the outside, but it can be detected by people with special powers or other means.
