Firefox browser sits empty until user interacts with it while running test

Anyone else ever see this behavior? I am using watir-webdriver 0.8.0 and launching a test through Cucumber. The browser launches and then indicates that "Transferring date from...."

Then it sits there blank screen until I mouse over it, then the test executes as long as I've got the mouse pointer in the active browser window. I am running Fire Fox 39.0. This behavior is not seen in Chrome, or IE...
